MAITHILI

As the night settled, everyone had gone to bed, but we girls were far from ready to call it a night. After all, it was the last evening before the wedding festivities officially began, and soon Preeti Bhabhi would tie the knot with Bhai-sa. The anticipation of the days ahead was too much to let sleep come easily. A spark of an idea hit me, and I squealed with excitement, causing everyone to turn their heads toward me in surprise. Calming myself down, I shared my idea, "Why not throw a little party in my room? Let’s stay up until 4 in the morning, sharing childhood memories and new chapters of our lives. We can hit the bed just in time to wake up for the haldi ceremony tomorrow."

They all exchanged glances, and in no time, their faces lit up with excitement. The plan was on! The four of us settled into the cozy comfort of my room, laughing and giggling as we reminisced. I opened up about my life in Paris, how I loved it there, yet how much I’d miss home, Maa, Papa, and all of them. Except for my brother,I didn’t have anyone else to call family. But when I met my bub's family, they welcomed me with such warmth and love that they encouraged me to see them as parental figures. It didn't take long for me to start calling them Maa and Papa.

We danced, giggled, and for hours, it was just us, happy, carefree, and lost in our memories. After some time, however, the energy waned, and Diya drifted into a peaceful slumber. The rest of us were left staring at our phones, trying to find something to do. That’s when my eyes caught something, Atharva’s story on Snapchat. It was of a pub, and instantly, my gut tightened with doubt. I quickly checked his location to confirm, and there it was, he was out at the pub this late.

Fuming with anger, I glanced at the two awake, then back at Diya, who was sound asleep, and finally at Kriti and Bhabhi-sa. Their eyes questioned my rising fury. Leaning in, I whispered everything to them, explaining what I saw. Anger flickered in their expressions too as they digested the news. But before we acted, I spoke up softly, "Before we go barging in, we need to find out who else is with him. It could just be Atharva or..."

Kriti and Bhabhi-sa nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation. Moving quietly, making sure not to wake Diya or alert anyone, we slipped out of the room. Kriti and Bhabhi-sa hurried toward the other boys' rooms while I made my way to his room, knocking softly. There was no answer, only an eerie silence, the kind you’d expect in an abandoned factory. Not a sound, not even a shuffle inside.

"They all went with him," Bhabhi-sa muttered under her breath as she and Kriti returned, eyes wide with disbelief and anger. "Let’s go to that pub, and see for ourselves." Kriti’s voice was steady, but there was a sharpness in her tone, the wheels of her mind already planning our next move.

We nodded in unison, determination burning in our eyes. Quietly, we locked the door behind us and raced to the parking lot, our feet moving with purpose. Without another word, we jumped into the car and drove toward the pub. Tonight, we weren’t just going to find answers, we were going to hold them accountable.

As we neared the pub, our frustration was only growing. Every call we made rang through without an answer, driving our anger deeper. The car’s AC was blasting, but it did nothing to cool the burning rage that simmered between us. I wiped the sweat from my forehead, barely noticing the cool air as my thoughts swirled around one question: How could they ignore us like this?

We parked quickly, stepping out into the night with determination and fury coursing through our veins. The heavy bass of the music from the pub thumped in the air, and with a shared glance, we headed inside, the blaring music swallowing us whole. My heart raced as we pushed through the dimly lit, crowded space, the colored lights flashing above us like some taunt. My eyes darted through the crowd, desperately searching for them. Each second that passed only built the tension in my chest, a mix of hurt and anger I couldn’t shake.
