Kate's POV:
I set up my apartment with birthday decorations and cleaned up the place to get ready for tonight. Today was Maddy's birthday, and I was going to make sure she had the best day. I figured just to have a small get together at my place with a few of our teammates since Maddy wanted something casual this year. I ordered takeout from her favorite sushi spot in Las Vegas and got a few bottles and mixers for tonight, spreading everything out on my counter space. I quickly got changed into a button up and some cargo pants before waiting for the guests to arrive.
The first guest arrived and I quickly let them in, brining the girls into my room.
"Okay so Maddy doesn't know you guys are here so stay in here until she comes", I quickly spoke.
Jada and Carter nodded their heads before jumping on my bed, making themselves right at home. The next few guests quickly arrived. Megan, Syd, A'ja and Kelsey all came next and quickly began making drinks. Soon after Maddy finally came.
"Happy Birthday!", we all yelled as the girl walked in the door.
"Thank you guys for all coming", she beamed.
"Girl it's not too late to hit the club", A'ja joked while giving the girl a hug.
"I know, I know. I just wanted something casual this year", she smiled.
"And thank you Kate for putting this all together, it means a lot", Maddy smiled while giving me a hug.
"Finally the big 23 but I actually I have a surprise for you", I smirked, pulling away from the hug.
"Happy Birthday!", Carter and Jada screamed as they ran out of my room.
"Oh my gosh you guys!", Maddy yelled, giving the two girls a hug.
"We couldn't miss out on your birthday", Jada smiled.
"I tried to get Caitlin and Sami out here but they play in Atlanta tomorrow", I spoke.
"This is perfect Kate", the girl smiled.
A few more of our teammates eventually trickled into my apartment. Everyone was mingling and having some drinks while I played some music on my speaker. I quickly went over to my kitchen and poured myself another drink. I told myself I wasn't going to drink too much tonight, but I found myself already tipsy and on my fourth drink. I made my way back over to my couch and sat down as the night went on around me.
"Hey party girl", Maddy spoke, taking a seat next to me.
"Having fun?", I asked.
"Yeah, it means a lot you got Jada and Carter out here", she spoke.
"Paige couldn't come", I muttered, taking another sip of my drink.
"I know she has a game tonight", Maddy replied.
"I'm surprised you aren't at it", I quickly replied.
I looked back down at my cup before taking another sip as I felt Maddy's eyes on me. Silence fell over us as I looked forward, reluctant to make eye contact with the girl.
"I'm going to get another drink", Maddy spoke as she quickly got up.
I got up off the couch and make my way over to Jada who was talking to Megan, sitting at my island.
"Ugh Kate I've missed you", Jada laughed as she through her arm around my neck, pulling me into a side hug.
"I've missed you too Jads", I laughed.
"I saw you and Miss girl over there chatting", Jada smirked, taking a sip of her drink.
"And? We're teammates", I spoke.
