Armaan was jolted out of a deep slumber by the sharp trill of his phone at 5 AM on a Sunday morning. It was odd—no one but close family and a few friends had this number. He grabbed his phone quickly, careful not to wake his sleeping wife, blinking away the sleep as the caller ID flashed: Dadi-sa.
With a furrowed brow, he quietly slipped out of bed, tiptoeing onto the balcony, where the cool air brushed against his face.
"Hello, Dadi-sa? Did something happen?" he asked, worry lacing his voice.
"No, but something will happen if you don't open your email and sign the contract that's been sent," she said, her tone firm, cutting straight to the point.
"Which contract? I don't even have my laptop with me," Armaan replied, confusion mounting.
"It doesn't matter. This one you can sign on your phone. It's the contract to confirm your position as Managing Partner, effective immediately. Read it thoroughly and understand it, but sign it as soon as possible," she urged.
"Dadi-sa, it's Sunday. What's the rush? Is there an issue?" Armaan asked, his voice rising in concern.
"The rush is because Sanjay might be planning something. The board, myself included, needs to make sure the transfer of responsibilities is seamless before anything goes wrong. Now, if you don't have any more questions, open your email and sign it as soon as you can. The board will handle the rest," she said, her tone leaving no room for argument as she hung up.
Armaan stood on the balcony, still in a daze. He sat down at the small desk, scrolling through the email. The contract was long, but nothing appeared suspicious. In fact, it granted him more freedom than he'd initially expected. He read through it twice, then a third time, before finally signing.
Moments later, a congratulatory call from Dadi-sa followed. She offered no further explanation, only a cryptic, "We'll talk later.
He glanced back to the bed where Abhira still lay, her form peaceful under the soft covers. Despite the early hour, sleep had fully evaded him. With his mind restless, he pulled out a notepad and began scribbling down ideas for the firm, the flurry of thoughts keeping him occupied as time passed.
It wasn't until the first rays of the sun streamed through the window that Abhira stirred. She blinked awake, her eyes landing on Armaan, hunched over the desk, surrounded by scattered notes. Quietly, she slipped out of bed and padded over to him, wrapping her arms around his neck from behind.
"Good morning, my love," she murmured, pressing a kiss to his temple. "What's gotten you out of bed so early?"
Armaan leaned back into her touch, a small smile tugging at his lips. "Dadi-sa called. There was some urgency with the Managing Partner contract. I couldn't go back to sleep after that."
Abhira sighed, her fingers gently stroking his hair. "You've already signed the contract, though, right? Why not come back to bed? It's Sunday, and our last day here."
She moved to straddle him on the chair, her fingers tracing delicate circles on his chest, her lips brushing against his ear. Yet, despite her efforts, Armaan's focus remained glued to his notes.
