Vivian sat across from her lawyer, the room filled with the quiet hum of legal talk and the rustling of papers. She looked poised, her hands clasped in her lap, but beneath her composed exterior, there was a current of frustration. The inheritance issue had been dragging on for months, and the involvement of her cousin—someone she hadn’t expected to make a claim—only made things worse.
Her lawyer, Mr. Gilmore, a seasoned professional with sharp eyes and a calm demeanor, adjusted his glasses as he leafed through the documents. "Vivian, I’ve gone through your father’s will again. There’s no mention of your cousin having any legal right to the inheritance. The estate and all its assets were clearly left to you as the sole beneficiary."
Vivian sighed, her gaze steady but troubled. "I know that, but my cousin seems to think that just because my father raised him after his parents passed, he’s entitled to something. He keeps insisting my father promised him a share."
Mr. Gilmore nodded, understanding the emotional complexity behind the legal issue. "It’s not uncommon for people in situations like this to feel entitled. However, legally speaking, your father’s will is the final word. Unless your cousin can produce concrete evidence—such as a codicil or another legally binding document—that shows your father promised him a share, he has no claim. But..."
Vivian frowned slightly, sensing the hesitation in his voice. "But?"
"Well, there’s the risk of a drawn-out legal battle," Mr. Gilmore explained. "Your cousin could contest the will, claiming undue influence, or argue that he was promised something verbally, which could lead to a lengthy court case. While the chances of him winning are slim, the legal costs and emotional toll could be considerable. He’s clearly acting out of desperation."
Vivian’s expression hardened at that. "This isn’t about the money for him. It’s about validation. He wants to prove that he was more than just someone my father took care of out of duty. He wants to be seen as an equal part of the family."
Mr. Gilmore leaned forward, folding his hands on the desk. "I understand. And that’s precisely what makes these cases complicated. Inheritance disputes often become less about legalities and more about emotional grievances. But you need to decide how far you’re willing to go. We can fight this and likely win, but it could take years. Are you prepared for that?"
Vivian let out a slow breath, the weight of the situation bearing down on her. "I want to protect what my father built. He worked hard for everything, and it’s mine by right. But... I don’t want to be heartless about it. He raised my cousin, after all. There’s a family bond there, even if he’s being unreasonable."
Mr. Gilmore nodded, his tone gentle but firm. "That’s understandable. However, this is your inheritance, and you have every right to protect it. Your cousin might feel slighted, but that doesn’t change the legal facts. You’re under no obligation to give him anything unless you want to. And even if you do, it should be on your terms."
