chapter xx
" give peace a chance, let the fear you have fall away,
i've got my eye on you
"

Maeve twisted around a few times before flickering her eyelashes, adjusting to The Road's night glow. She sat up slowly, her limbs stiff from the deep sleep she had fallen into, one of the few times she enjoyed her sleep, without nightmares creeping into her mind like a casting shadow.

She looked down, at the coat beneath her; it was Agatha's, something that confused Maeve even more. She couldn't really remember what happened or why she was asleep in the first place. She sighed softly and looked around as she rubbed her eye gently.

A few inches behind her was sat Rio, sharpening the edges of her dagger with close precision, her eyes locked on her task. "I was starting to think you were dead," Rio informed the teenager, not looking upwards, her attention still on the dagger in her hand.

Maeve raised an eyebrow, amused by Rio. She knew that they would have fun together. She just knew it. The girl chuckled softly, running a hand through her hair, a habit she grew to hate throughout the years since she only did it when she felt a little. . . off. However, running her fingers through her soft curls, she felt something weird. She picked a braid and moved it into her field of view.

It was a small, braided part of her hair with different colours and species of flowers intertwined in between the strands. She giggled softly to herself, touching a small flower, in awe at them being on her hair. They looked so pure, so colourful. . . It was like a splash of life into her painful destruction.

Maeve looked up, her eyes returning to Rio. "Did you. . ." the girl trailed off, slightly confused. Rio looked up with raised eyebrows like she didn't understand the question at first. Maeve motioned to her hair and, specifically, to a braided part with a few flowers on it.

"It was either that or watch you drool in your sleep," Rio stated, for some reason being more defensive than she should have been. She didn't know why she felt the need to defend herself to a teenager for doing something as simple as braiding her hair. Maybe it was an underlying fear that she had yet to discover that she would hurt Agatha again by caring for a Blake just like Agatha once did.

And look where that got them, them barely speaking. But, now, that Agatha was finally talking to Rio again, she couldn't let a teenager get in her way of getting Agatha to trust her again. She could feel the love Agatha still had for her, she just couldn't find how she was going to show her love back.

Maeve smiled, still appreciating Rio's efforts. "Where is she?" Maeve questioned, her fingers tracing against the fabric of Agatha's coat. Who would have thought that Agatha of all people would give away her coat to make Maeve more comfortable in her sleep. If being honest, Maeve knew from the beginning that Agatha had a heart, and a very big one if she might add, she just didn't like showing, preferring to keep her distance emotionally, something that Maeve could relate to.

Rio didn't answer, instead, she looked over her shoulder into the endless forest. Maeve looked where Rio was, noting a dark silhouette, walking back and forth under the soft moonlight, waiting for something. It didn't take a genius to realise that she was probably waiting for Billy to wake up, not knowing that Maeve was already awake.

It was so annoying seeing Agatha worry so much behind closed doors but hide it all away when she could simply just express her worry and feelings. Maeve shook her head, her eyes falling to her hands where she held a small flower that was previously attached to her hair.
