"Don't forget to boil the sweet potatoes so they'll soften by the time I get back."

"I got you, mom."

Destiny's P.O.V.

Carefully, I brought the large pot from underneath the sink full of cold water; placing it on the back eye of the stove towards the left corner. A few drops of water made it just close enough to meet the glowing electrical eye bringing heat.

"I'm not sure if I mentioned this to you, either. Troy is coming by to help set the table and even help prepare the turkey wings."

I was caught off guard completely , almost knocking the warm pot over at the mention of that name. This wasn't a good thing.

"Careful, girl. You wanna burn this house down?"

My mind came back, and I fold my arms.

"No, ma'am'. It's just...does he have to come by today?"

She chuckles.

"Do you have somewhere you need to be?"

I awkwardly smile tapping my right foot.

"No. I just didn't expect us to have company until the actual holiday. Thanksgiving is next week."

"It is. But you know in this household we prep early. The sooner, the better."

She was right.

"Besides. I already reached out to your uncle Darry and he's working overtime. I ran into Troy's mother at work the other day and she told me he was free."

"How nice of her..."

I glance over to the doorway.

"He should be here soo-"

Ding Dong.

Fuck. My heart was already racing.

Immediately, I ran upstairs to hide in my room. I shut the door and grab the thickest hoodie I could find and threw a set of my grey Champion sweatpants over my dark black Nike Pro shorts.

Staring out the window, I realized his hair definitely grew from the last time I saw him. What once were small, caterpillar shaped curls were now a semi-long, thick set of dreadlocks stopping at his shoulders. I also noticed he had a firm set of toned arms that were the direct opposite of flabby muscles when we were kids.

He took a brief moment to look through my window on the second floor, and winked at me before giving open arms to my mother. Embarrassed, I pull back and hid underneath the covers.

I knew it was a mistake what happened that day.

"Destiny! Troy is here!"

Fuck my life.

"Coming!"

I gather enough courage as I could, slowly making my way back downstairs. One step after the other, I dreaded even as little as conversation with this nigga.

"There you are. Well don't be shy, 'Des. Say hi."

I stick my hand out for a handshake, only to be pulled into an unnecessary bear hug.

"Now you know that's not how you treat a family friend."

My mom laughs as he lets me go.

"You're absolutely right, Troy. I don't know what's going on inside that head of hers. You know you're always welcome any time."

"Thanks, Mrs. Williams."

"Boy, please. We're all grown, now. You can call me, Anita"

We all made our way into the living room just chopping it up. Perhaps he forgot about what happened and I can finally relax. It was so long ago.
