As Tarun and I walked hand in hand into the hall, I couldn't help but feel apprehensive about Papa's reaction. The memory of him leaving without a word when I told him about Tarun still lingered in my mind. I wondered if I had made a mistake by marrying him, and if I had inadvertently hurt Papa.
Lost in thought, I didn't even realize that I was standing right in front of Papa. He was sitting on the sofa, engrossed in reading the newspaper. His gaze fell on me and Tarun, and he stared at us for a moment, his expression unreadable.
I snapped back to reality and gently pulled Tarun's hand, gesturing for him to touch Papa's feet as a sign of respect. We did, but Papa remained silent, his eyes fixed on some distant point.
He slowly removed his glasses, and I could see tears shining in his eyes. He turned away, his voice barely above a whisper, and said to Mumma, " Please attend to our guest. Prepare some snacks and refreshments."
His words cut deep, and my heart shattered into a million pieces. I felt a stinging sensation in my eyes as tears threatened to spill over. Controlling my emotions, I whispered, "Papa..." My voice was barely audible, but I knew Papa had heard me.
"Papa..." I said again, my voice cracking as tears streamed down my face. But he didn't even flinch, standing with his back turned to us.
"Papa..." Tarun said, his voice heavy with emotion. I looked up at him, my tears continuing to flow.
"Papa, are you angry with us?" I asked, my voice shaking. "I know I made a mistake, but Papa, I love Tarun. I can't be happy with anyone else. Tarun is everything to me," I said, wiping away fresh tears with one hand while holding Tarun's hand tightly with the other.
"This boy has become so important to you that you didn't even come to meet us?" Papa yelled, his voice breaking with emotion.
"Papa, I was scared," I replied, expressing my fear.
"You weren't scared when you got married, were you?" Papa asked, his words cutting deep. "You, who were supposed to be our guiding light, didn't even ask us before making such a huge decision. You just went ahead and got married," he said, his voice filled with pain and disappointment.
"Papa... I wanted to tell you, but I didn't have the courage," I said, my voice trembling in a desperate plea. "Papa, please forgive me. Tarun is a good person, he loves me a lot and takes care of me."
But Papa didn't seem to hear my words. He stared at us, his eyes filled with anger and hurt. Then, he started walking towards Tarun. In that moment, I didn't even realize what was happening. Papa's hand shot out, and he slapped Tarun across the face.
"Papa!" I screamed, shocked and horrified. But Tarun held my hand tightly, his grip like a vice, silencing me.
Tarun looked Papa straight in the eye and said, "Sir, if you have a problem with me calling you Papa, I won't do it. I'll respect your boundaries." He paused, his voice firm but polite.
