I met my best friend when I was just six years old. It wasn't as cute as most first meetings between friends though...
Rin Itoshi, Age Six:
"Momma it hurts!"
"Rin stay strong baby–!"
"Get the ambulance, hurry!"A peaceful soccer game came to an abrupt end, when Rin Itoshi felt a sharp pain in his knee. It happened as soon as he landed with the ball, crying out to his mother, who was comforting her son as best as she could.
...
"A meniscus tear?"
"Precisely"I didn't understand a THING the doctor's were saying... All I got from it was–
"Physical activities such as sports should be proceeded with caution", the doctor pointed at the x-ray of Rin's knee, "Furthermore, we're gonna have to keep Itoshi here for just a bit longer. We need to figure out if this will develop into a discoid meniscus–"
"Wh–What?", little Rin choked, looking around the room in a panic, "What does that mean momma–?"
"It means that it's easier for your knee to get hurt", the doctor dumbed it down, clearing his throat, "Now if you don't mind, we should all leave the room so the nurse's can run the diagnostics"
Rin's family all said their goodbyes, promising him that they'd return with some of his toys and favorite snacks. Rin could only muster a small wave, looking down at the sheets of the hospital. His curiosity took over, peeling back the blankets, only for his face to pale. A large scar ran down his knee, which he could make out through the brace. For a six-year old boy, it was too much to take.
Does... Does this mean I can't play soccer anymore?
"Wow! That looks gross!"
Rin's squeamish face was replaced by one of surprise, not expecting a random girl to pop out from behind the door. Her hair was messy with curls, evident that she had probably just gotten out of bed. She smiled with her teeth, showing off her missing tooth.
"Did I scare you? Sorry! I didn't mean to", she waddled into the room.
Rin's eyes followed the little girl, who had a bright pink arm cast on her left arm. She scrambled onto the chair that was by his hospital bed, gaining her balance before staring down at him with widened eyes. Perhaps they were naturally that big though?
"Hi! Do you talk? You're not saying anything so you probably can't huh?"
Rin could only gawk at her, even as a child, he wasn't the most social person. At this point in his life, he always had the help of his brother and sister to talk to strangers... But this was the first time someone approached him without either of them at his side.
The girl pouted, jumping off her feet and landing on her butt on the soft cushion of the chair, "Aww man~ You're the only other kid here too! All the other rooms had a bunch of old people", her arms were crossed as she kicked in frustration.
It was silent.... for about five seconds. Rin would come to learn that this girl could not stop talking.
"So how'd you get that nasty cut there?", she pointed at his knee, before gasping, "Oh wait! You can't talk huh?! Let me grab a pencil–"
"Soccer–"
"You can talk?!"She immediately got excited, standing back up on the chair to be more at level with him. Rin was caught off guard as she grabbed his hand with her good one, sparkles in her eyes.
"What's your name?! You play soccer, that's so cool! I don't know how to play cause my parents won't let me. Why are you here at the hospital–?"
"Kimura!"
