Jon Snow is a typical bastard son of Eddard, house of Stark-Warden of the North. He has been brought up in fine royalty. However, as he gets older he realises his fathers wife doesn't like him.
He wants to be like his father and his uncle Benjin. To be a man of the nights watch. He wants to protect the wall and the people beyond it. He takes his vows as a promise to always protect and never leave the wall until asked by the Lord Commander.
The nights watch is for men who are poor, stealers, people who are a disappointment to their families and bastards such as Jon.
