Facts: Rai has been fluent in Tulu, Hindi, and English since childhood. She trained in classical dance and music for five years during her teens. Her favorite subject was zoology. While in college, she modeled and appeared in several television commercials, and entered the Miss India pageant, in which she was awarded second place. She won Miss World 1994. In 2003, she was the first Indian actress to be a juror at the Cannes Film Festival. In April 2003 she suffered an accident on the sets of Khakee when a car driven by a stuntman got out of control, hit her, took her down a crevice and slammed her right into a cactus plant. She broke a bone in one foot and suffered severe cuts. In 2004 she became the first Indian female to be immortalized in wax at the world-famous Madame Tussaud's wax museum. In 2009, the Government of India honored her with the Padma Shri, which recognizes distinguished contributions in various spheres of activity. In 2012, the Government of France awarded her with the Order of Arts and Letters. Rai is also an ambassador for several charity organizations and supports many philanthropic causes. She was appointed a Goodwill Ambassador for the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) in 2012.
