Seated in the kitchen of my Gram’s house, I couldn’t help but criticize her organizational skills (or lack of, anyway…).

With many different paintbrushes scattered around the room, along with her post-its, and artwork, she was clearly in need of a major clean-up. And while I would have loved to kindly inform her of that, I knew that it would only result in me receiving a lecture from my sister on how impolite I was being. Getting in trouble by my pregnant sister wasn’t exactly something on my to-do list, especially considering her hormones which seemed to be all over the place.

It was irritating really, how I had no choice but to put up with her strange habits, especially the debacles that occurred around one in the morning – those were my favorite. And now, while I would be staying with my Grams in the town of Walden-on-Sea, far away from my sister who’d be residing all the way back in London, I couldn’t help but long to be staying with her at home. Home was where all my friends were. Home was where all the hot guys were. Home was where One Direction was having a concert this summer – one that I had been determined to attend.

Obviously, judging by the sudden change of plans spurred by the baby lounging around in my sister’s belly, I knew I wouldn’t be able to attend, and I couldn’t help but loathe my sister for this. She was the reason that I wasn’t going to be able to see my favorite band perform live. I was even planning on getting backstage passes so I could meet all the boys and have them fall in love with me – I was pretty darn hot, to be honest. How could they not fall in love with me?

“Flo!” my sister exclaimed gleefully, her eyes scanning the parameter of the room. “Look! There’s so much room for you to hang your pictures!” She gestured towards the wall that was practically covered with paintings. I didn’t know if she was blind, or if she was just this naturally stupid – my bet was on the latter – but it was pretty obvious that there was no room for me to put up anything of mine, not that I’d want to. My drawings of One Direction were something I wanted to keep a secret.

Well, not a total secret – I’d reveal them once I actually met the band, which unfortunately wasn’t going to happen this summer.

Thanks a lot, Nora. You’re the best sister ever.

I nodded, biting back an insult bubbling at the tip of my mouth. “Yeah, there’s just so much room here. It’ll definitely be an awesome stay here.”

Grams smiled at me, obviously pleased by the fact that I complimented her house. “Aw, Flo, it’s going to be wonderful having you here.” She enveloped me in her arms, and while my face was pressed firmly against her shoulder, I could detect the scent of cinnamon and paint and nail polish remover lingering on her clothing. Whoever said that old people spelled nice and home-y was wrong. They smelled disgusting. Of course, I never smelt disgusting; I was practically perfect.

And my perfection had been what would have gotten the hottest guy in my old school – the star football player, Derek – to ask me out. But, before he was even given the opportunity, Nora had decided to ruin it all by announcing that she’d be kicking me out so she could live with Lenny, her hippie of a boyfriend. Why she thought choosing him over me was a good idea, I’d never know.

But the distance could give her some time to reevaluate things and realize that she was mistaken in abandoning me, and then she’d pick me up, take me back to London, and I’d go to that One Direction concert with my friends.

Everything was going to work out in the end.

            I’d make sure of it.

“Hey Flo! Would you fancy going for a stroll around town?”

Honestly, I wouldn’t, but I was going to have to act like a real angel if I wanted to convince Nora to let me stay with her. Maybe accompanying her on some sight-seeing would really earn me some points with her. She always did have a soft spot for me.

“We’ll make a stop by the ice cream shop though! The baby wants some ice cream.”

I groaned. Great, I definitely needed some more fattening food in my life. But, I knew I had to go – there was no doubt about it – so I sucked it up and nodded, and we headed off the ice cream shop – the one that would change my life.
