Although Andersen wrote three autobiographies in his lifetime, when the critic Georg Brandes questioned him about the authoritative one, the poet claimed he had already written it, 'The Ugly Duckling' –'Hans Christian Andersen: The Story of His Life and Work 1805 – 1875'.

Appearance sets 'The Ugly Duckling' apart from his peers. No longer able to take the ostracism and rejection, he sets on a journey to adulthood in this timeless tale of transformation.
