17. Pitch's Story

Muse POV

"Why can't I ever understand

To see this world in fiery red

I know I cannot change at all

Just find me at the flaming core." Pitch recited. "This is about me."

"How so?" I asked him.

"Here, take a seat." He said. I felt Jack's cold hands lead me to what felt like a chair. I shut my eyelids waiting for the story. I could feel Jack sit down next to me and Pitch was nowhere to be found.

Out of nowhere a hand touched my cheek, a sandy hand, Pitch's hand. "You know the poem so well. I watched as you brought the Moon back with those words, but they are more powerful than you think." His hand left and his story started:

"So unlike you, I was reborn by the Sun. Actually I was the first, even before the Moon gained its soul. I lived a simple afterlife, very lonely one too. The Sun always told me stories of the Universe but never anything else. He was nice at that time, he was so happy and his joy spread across Earth and everyone was happy. Those were my good days.

"After a couple decades, the Sun's mother gave birth to another soul that occupied the Moon. Man in Moon they called him, or even Manny, but he was always the Sun. He saw how his mom favored the Moon more and he got jealous. Over a few decades, the Sun started to burn more and more and dragging me down with him. As he changed, so did I. All the warm inside me vanished and I was turned evil, into Pitch Black.

"I began to find my new job more entertaining. I got to scare the local townsfolk and make children scream. It was all quite worth it, until the Man in the Moon made the Guardians who gave the children hopes, wonder, dreams. I was turned into a bad dream.

"But you see, the Sun didn't back down without a fight. It scoured the globe for a champion that could beat the Moon in a duel. The Moon agreed to the fight and won. Both champions in the end died, and there was no winner. The Mother saw this and took the Sun's powers away. I felt his grief.

"Some years after, the Sun sent me on a mission to take his power back. I felt bad for the Sun and did as he asked but during my mission, I was caught and lost all his power except for a tiny bit, just enough to rebirth one person and give them enough power to be spectacular.

"I returned with it and the Sun was completely disappointed in me. But he still used it to rebirth a young girl after she died when Vesuvius erupted and buried Pompeii in ashes. I watched as the girl died and then took a new breath of life under a new name, Despair. Completely fit her too.

"She was sent out to challenge the Moon, but he declined and the Sun grew furious. Despair and I were sent out to destroy the world. To get rid of the happiness and love. That's only when I got tossed aside. The Sun had no use for me anymore so he tried to destroy me. I quickly fought back and ran away forever.

"Then Jack was reborn. The Sun found him extremely valuable, but the Moon got him first. The Sun declared Jack as a champion and sent Despair after him, but the Moon protected the boy. The Moon didn't want the boy to be destroyed so he told the Sun that he would find a champion for him to fight, and which ever one would win, would get the planet, and the other would be exiled.

"After many, many years of searching, the Moon found Marie. Just a simple trouble- making life-saving girl, but he saw potential in her. She died the night the Titanic sank while saving many children. And that is you Muse.

"The Sun heard about this new champion and saw her as a huge threat. He tried to call for me, he wanted me back by his side to destroy you, but I refused. Throughout all those years I've been planning my revenge on the Guardians and was finally getting it. The Sun dared not disturb me or else I could've killed him in a heartbeat.

"Then Jack, you discovered Muse and you know the rest." Pitch explained everything that he could.

"So that poem is yours?" I asked him.

"Yes. I said that to the Sun before he tried to kill me. All those words are true. Whatever the Sun feels, I feel too. I can't change from being Pitch Black, the boogeyman."

"But you can help us." I said smiling, I was pretty sure I was looking at him.

"Sorry for blinding you. I didn't want the Moon to kill me because he thought I would side with the Sun."

"It's fine-"

"No it's not." Jack spoke after all this time.

"Jack. This is going to give me a whole new advantage in the duel."

"How?"
