Islam doesn't want to get rid of your desires. Islam is supposed to guide your desires and then allow you to fulfill them. If you say that you want to guide your own desires and not let anything decide for you, then don't you realize that you never controlled your own desires to begin with? Society, culture, peer pressure, and external influences have always been deciding for you. Desires must be guided. I'd rather let Allah guide my desires than society and culture.
