This beautifully written one-shot got me so excited for this idea. Thank you to one of my closest, dearest friends (anony.) for writing something that made my heart smile.

"S-P-I-R-I-T! Let's hear it!"

The people in the bleachers roared their excited applause, some stomping their feet like thunder in anticipation of a lightning-fast score.

"Think we'll make it tonight, Mitchy?" Kirstie asked her fellow cheerleader, waving a blue-and-white pom over her head.

I winked and did the same. "Of course."

"With how your man is playing, you're probably right."

I rolled my eyes, smoothing my bangs out of my eyes. "He's not my man. He is doing well, but he's definitely not mine."

"Whatever. Everyone knows that Scott goes straight for a hug from his favorite cheerleader whenever they win a game. It's like a ritual."

I couldn't help the slight blush that covered my cheeks. "You're delusional." But she had a point, if I thought about it. When was the last game that Scott hadn't raced over to scoop me up in his arms after a triumph? I couldn't bring one to mind, and I wasn't quite sure how to feel about it.

The buzzer rang through the gymnasium, making me cringe. The coach called a time out, and both teams ran to their individual sides. I watched as Scott darted over, his shoulders moving in time to his heavy breathing. He put his hands on his hips and leaned forward slightly as Coach gave guiding instructions on how to bring the game home. Avi said something that made the rest of the team laugh, and as Scott turned to look at his teammate he caught me gazing at him. I panicked at first, worried Scott would assume what was true and think that I was admiring him a little too well, but then Scott smiled and waved a bit and everything that was constricting my lungs eased up. I felt himself smile in return before turning to see Kirstie's eyes on me.

"Not your man, hmm?" she smirked.

"Oh, shut up." I swatted her with my pom poms as she cackled out a laugh. I always felt happiest at games, because I was surrounded by the people I loved the most. Whenever I put on my blue pants and laced up my white sneakers, I got a surge of excited energy that ran through me and made me jittery. Kirstie was my best friend, and also the head cheerleader, so on top of being able to hang with her all the time, every now and then I got to have a say in what kind of routine the squad did and they were always a blast. I was friends with most of the guys on the basketball team, too, especially Scott... who ran around the gym all sweaty and exhilarated. Yeah, I loved basketball games.

They practically had this game in the bag. The opposing team had never been too great at playing, so nobody was surprised when the home team racked up a ton of points almost immediately. Nevertheless, it still got your heart pounding to watch those final seconds tick away, and as Scott threw the ball towards the basket for the final time everyone held their breath. When it landed in, people exploded, jumping up and screaming, especially the cheerleaders. Almost simultaneously, Scott and Jeremy ran over to the sideline. Kirstie practically jumped on her boyfriend as Scott jogged over to gather me in his arms, just like he always did. I smiled into his jersey, pulling back to tilt my head up at him.

"Congrats, superstar," I shouted over the noise.

He grinned back down at me. "Is it just me, or do you cheer louder whenever I'm the one with the ball?"

I made a tsk. "You're so full of yourself." He might be completely correct, but he was still full of himself.

He laughed and wrapped an arm around my shoulders. "C'mon, I'll drive you home after I change."
