"Enough arguing I volunteer!"

"Gavroche no!"

I watched in horror as my only friend climbed over the barricade amd into the blood splattered street. I reached over trying to reach him to pull him back, but he was too far away. A gun was fired, barley missing Gavroche, but hitting me in the hand. I let out a tiny scream of pain but was able to hold back my tears. I took off my red handkerchief that was tied around my arm and wrapped it tightly around my wound to stop the bleeding. A second shot fired but this time it hit Gavroche in the shoulder.

"No!" I screamed. I tried to climb over the barricade to reach my friend but Enjolras held me back.

Gavroche began climbing back up the barricade, his clothes stained with blood and his body weak and pale. I broke free from Enjolras's grip and held my hand over the barricade. Gavroch reached up and grabbed my hand, causing pain to shoot up through my arm and I began to help him over the barricade. But as I was pulling him up, a third shot fired. Gavroce went limp and released my hand. I crawled through Gavroche's secret entrance to the barricade and pulled his lifeless body back. Tears flowed down my cheeks and I didn't try to stop them. Two men came and carefully lifted my friend's body away.

I stood up and Marius comforted me, I wasn't the only one who lost someone upon the barricades. I sat in silence as Joly stitched up my hand

"We will make them pay!" Enjolras shouted

"They deserve to die, they killed a child" Marius agreed

Enjolras turned to face me "Évolié, you are young only at the age of 12. Although I have no doubt in your strength, you have much life to live. Leave from here, and dont look back."

"I'm not leaving" I said, I wasn't about to let my friends fight without me. Not long after that, the sound of boots echoed down the street. Soon the first row of soilders appeared. I ran up the steps of a building with Joly, Courfeyrac, Combeferre, and Enjolras. The soilders followed us in, but stayed on the bottom floor. A cold silence fell over the building. None of us dared to move. Suddenly the soilders fired their guns through the floor, and Corphyac, Combeferre, and Joly fell to the floor.

The soilders ran up the stairs surrounding me and Enjolras alone. We were surrounded with no weapons to fight with. Inspector Javert stood at the front of the group, pointing his gun at us. I looked in surprise at the inspector, he was supposed to be dead.

"He's the leader," Javert said motioning to Enjolras "He's only got to stay there and we can shoot him on the spot. The girl killed one of our guards in the outer posts with a handcart."

"What are you waiting for? Shoot us." I said

"Would you like your eyes bandaged?" An officer asked

"No"

"Very well then." He said, raising his musket, "Take aim!"

Grantaire, who had just woken up from his drunken state, pushed his way past the soilders and stood next to Enjolras.

"Vive la république! I belong to it."Grantaire said. Enjolras smiled and grabbed his hand.

The soilders put their muskets up ready to kill us, but before they shot, Javert put his hand up.

"Wait," he said his eyes focused on me. "The girl leaves"

"But inspector," one of the soilders objected , "she is one of them."

"The girl leaves," he repeated , then looked at me "Come here" he said, and I obeyed. He grabed me by the shoulder. Enjolras still held the torn red fabric that once was our flag. He stuck it in my hand as Javert dragged me out.

"What about the others? " One soldier asked.

"Kill them." Javert replied. Gunshots fired, and my friends were killed.
