Chapter 12

I went over to the door and knocked. What am I supposed to say to them? I didn't have time to think about it because my dad was opening the door. "Hello?"

"Hi." I smiled.

"Can I help you?" He asked.

"Yeah, could I maybe come in?"

"I don't think that's a good idea?"

"I'm sorry it's just, I used to live here a long time ago, and it has a lot of memories. Please, could I just look around?" He looked at me wondering if he should let me in.

"Let me ask my wife." He said and turned around, "Christie!" He called for my mother.

"Yeah" She asked walking up to my father, he whispered in her ear and they looked at me. "Why of course you can come in. We are about to have dinner, you can eat with us if you would like."

"Really? I wouldn't want to be a burden." I said even though I would love to have dinner with them one last time.

"Oh nonsense! You wouldn't be a burden! Come on in!" She smiled at me and we all walked in. The house as much of it I could see at least, was the exact same as I remembered it. We walked into the dining room and there sat my brother and sister.

I sat beside my mom and across from my brother. "Nick, Thalia, this is, "She looked to me.

"Violet. Violet-" I started to say Rose but that is their last name, and I am not a part of their family anymore. "Evans." I finished with my real last name.

"Violet used to live here." I smiled at them, my sister is still too young to completely understand what was going on, but smiled back at me. Nick looked at me curiously. It hurts, them having no idea who I was. But it is for the best.

We all started to eat, "So Violet, where are you from?"

"Well I lived here for a while, but I live in Sioux Falls now." I said, it's basically the truth.

"In South Dakota? That's pretty far away." My dad commented.

"Yeah, there was some stuff going on and I wanted to come see the house."

"Where are your parents? Didn't they want to see the house." He asked.

"No, they aren't around anymore." I coughed awkwardly.

"Oh, we are so sorry." My mom said. Well Christie, she isn't my mom anymore.

"It's alright, it happened a long time ago."

"How old are you?" She asked looking somewhat concerned.

"16. I will be 17 in a few months."

"And you came here all by yourself? You don't live by yourself do you?"

"Oh no I live with a family friend. He is like a dad to me though, and a few other people live there too. They are like my brothers," I glance at Nick quickly, "I had my friend take me here though."

"Oh alright, that makes me feel better that you aren't all alone. Where is your friend? He could have come in too."

"No he wanted to give me some alone time." I smiled at her.

We all made small talk and when we were finished eating I started to help Christie with the dishes. "Oh you don't need to do that."

"You are our guest," My dad- Tom said.

"It's the least I could do." I insisted.

"Nick!" He yelled, and Nick walked into the kitchen, "Show Violet around."
