I would never thought I was going to see him again. Like ever. But things changed.
"Lauren, I've got something to tell you." My dad said when I saw down.
I looked at my mom, she didn't tell me anything.
Being the only child, it was easy. I was use to having friends over at my house all the time. They were like my family.
"Remember when I told you that we may possibly be moving?"
"Yeah...?"
"Well, I just got a job as an assistant coach for the Edmonton Oilers."
I wanted to say something but I just couldn't get anything out.
"Lauren?" My mom said waving her hand in front of my face.
"Dad, that's great news, but you know who's there right?"
"We are both aware Lauren."
"Look at it as a new start." My mom added.
That's the thing, I don't know if I wanted to have a new start with him.
Him as in Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of the Oilers.
When he was still back home, we went to the same high school together. We were pretty much high school sweethearts. Ryan and I were together all the time, if you saw Ryan somewhere, I was in the close areas of him. We were inseparable.
That was until he got drafted, four years ago. It was also when we stopped talking completely. We broke it off earlier, long distance just was not my thing. Yeah, I would watch an Oilers game whenever I could but I just couldn't get past how everything we had in high school just disappeared like it was never a thing.
I kind of just left the house with my hockey stuff and drove down to the rink. I needed to think and let everything process in my head. I was actually going to be seeing Ryan every day again.
My dad was the head coach of the Red Deer Rebels and now he's getting his shot at the big leagues. Yeah, he coached a lot of the guys who are in the NHL, who I'm friends with all of them. Ryan being one of those guys my dad coached. I would talk to them every now and then, except for Ryan.
After I got back from the rink, my mom and dad were already packing all of our stuff.
"When are we leaving?" I asked.
"Hopefully within the next week or so." My dad said.
In a way I kind of wanted to see Ryan again. We really did love each other and it was just weird how things went on after we broke up.
---
We took the last couple of boxes into our new house. I've had that big move once before when my dad was named the head coach in Red Deer.
Let's just say Ryan and I knew each other when we really young kids and we pretty much followed each other everywhere. Until after he got drafted.
The start of the preseason wasn't for another week which gave us a lot of time to settle in and get use to the new place.
The preseason was really for the team and staff to get use to each other and for the staff to choose the rookies they wanted.
I chose not to go during the preseason.
When preseason started, Ryan just thought it was my dad who moved, which is what my dad told me.
"Dad can I come with you to the first practice?" I asked.
"Of course you can honey." He smiled.
I was kind of nervous and scared at the same time.
This is a short chapter, it's the first one so I kind of just wanted to make the first one one of those intro chapters.
Hope you guys will enjoy this story :)
