"Okay, honey, here we are," my mom said, unbuckling her seat belt. We were at a small church, a few people loitering out the front. She turned to face me. "Now go in there and make some friends!"

I stare at her, holding back a sarcastic 'olay' with all of my might. "Sure, mom." I say instead with a sigh. I start to open the door.

"And, Hazel," she says, "one more thing."

"What is it?" I say, sitting back down to face her.

"Don't be too... you know... Mexican," she smiled at me sympathetically.

"Olay," I muttered, hopping out the car.

"What did you say?" my mom leans over to the passenger side, looking up at me with a frown.

"I said okay," I lie. "I'll see you later, mom."

"Bye sweetie," she called as she drove off.

I watch her car disappear around a corner before taking a deep breath, straightening my sombrero and walking into the church.
