“This is the Necromancer temple?”

Sophie struggled to disguise her disappointment. The temple was simply an ordinary house in a bleak part of town.

“I’m afraid so,” Chrysanthemum sighed. “But you’ll be alright. It’s more…dramatic…inside.”

Sophie nodded slowly. “Zephyr?”

“I am here.”

“Good. Come on. The rest of you? Get out of here. Now.”

Blue grabbed Tala’s hand and they vanished. Chrysanthemum lent forward.

“Sophie, trust no one,” she said, urgently. “They will tell you things and you will believe them. You must not trust a single thing they say to you. And you must not let them know you are afraid.”

Sophie nodded and was about to ask a question when Blue reappeared and both he and Chrysanthemum popped into non-existence.

“Well,” Sophie forced a smile. “Come, Zephyr Sylph, my faithful servant. Necromancy awaits.”

Sophie had absolutely no idea how you went about getting them to open the door to a Temple of Necromancy, particularly not one with a “No Cold Callers” sign beside the door and an old boot lying by the step. Feeling uninspired, she knocked.

The door opened instantly, rattling on a chain, and an eye inserted itself suspiciously in the gap.

“Yes?” someone – presumably the owner of the eye – drawled.

“I am Sophie Merith, the Night Princess,” Sophie announced, shaking back her hair, “and I command that you let me enter.”

She didn’t exactly have a commanding voice, nor did she have dramatic hair or a cloak, but the eye went huge and white instantly.

“Your highness,” the voice murmured. “Forgive me.”

“I shall once you let me in.”

The door was opened and Sophie looked at the hunched, trembling man.

“You are forgiven. You were not to know. This is my companion, Zephyr. She will accompany me.”

The man looked uneasy but nodded frantically. “As you wish, your highness. Of course!”

Sophie nodded once. “I am here. I have come. I wish to speak to the one in charge.”

The man bobbed a terrified bow. “Of course, of course. If you would…just…wait here….”
