"April!" was the first thing I said when I landed in the abandoned parking lot that I called home. I was soaking wet from the rain, but I didn't care because I wanted to see her and tell her all about my time away. "April!"
"Hello, Eli." Parker, my grandfather, appeared out of nowhere looking particularly happier than usual.
"Hey, Gramps!" I greeted the old man. "It's great to see you!"
Aella came out too, but she didn't look as happy as Parker. Her veins stuck out of her temples, her skin pale but also flushed; her eyes red.
"Is everything alright?" I asked, but I wasn't as concerned as I should have been. I kept looking over Aella's shoulder, hoping for April to appear any second now.
"It's April." Aella said, sobbing. Suddenly, a sharp pain ran through my chest. Was April okay?
"What about her?" I asked, almost trembling.
"We woke up and she'd gone." Parker said in a chilling whisper.
"Gone?"
"I know, I couldn't believe it. How could she just leave?" Aella burst into tears. "We were just becoming really good friends."
"Did she..." my heart felt like it was crumbling into a million little pieces. "Did she leave a note, or anything?"
"No. She just left. And she hasn't come back, not for those two weeks you've been gone."
I sat down and cried. I never saw April Gold again.
