Rolling over Gwen checked the alarm on her nightstand. Glowing red block digits told her it was two o'clock. What had woken her?

Then the slow steady clicking came again. The noise deafened in the silence, causing her breath to catch in her throat.

It grew into a rhythm coming from her bedroom door. Gwen dare not call out.

She turned to find her husband fast asleep, oblivious to the sound that had taken on a life of its own.

Gwen laid down pulled the covers tight over her head.

The most dreaded sound filled the quiet night air, "Mommy".
