Third person POV

Dan watched Phil leave and head back to the ball. He had really thought him and Phil had shared something that night but obviously not. What more did he expect? He was nothing more than a worker to Phil and that's all he would stay. But Dan knew he was hiding something, he just wanted to know what.

"You know Phil?" PJ threw Dan off his train of thought.
"I'm his parents servant so I suppose," He told his friends, feeling a little dispirited as he said that. He wished he could say "yeah, he's my boyfriend", even just 'friend' would've been enough for him. But the truth was he was neither of those things and the sooner he learned to accept this, the better.
"You like him don't you?" Chris narrowed his eyes at Dan. He hadn't realised he had been so obvious but then again Chris and he had been friends for who knows how long so it wasn't much of a surprise Chris could sense when he had a crush.
"I think so." Saying it out loud made Dan's stomach fill with butterflies, he cursed as his face turned as red as the roses in the garden. He pulled one off its stem and twirled it in his fingers, imagining himself giving it to Phil.
"No Dan!" Chris grabbed the rose and threw it on the floor in order to get the younger boys attention. "This is dangerous. He's a prince and you're just a-"
"Just a servant boy yes I know!" Dan cut in before Chris could say everything he already knew to be true, "I'm a peasant and he's a rich prince, nothing's ever going to happen between us and I'm being stupid but he doesn't want to pick a princess. I know."
Chris looked at him sceptically, trying to figure out where his friend was going with this.
"So you think he might pick you instead?" PJ asked Dan cautiously, the other two had forgotten he was there for a moment but Chris was glad someone could put his thoughts into a question.

"No..." Dan trailed off as he thought about that possibility.
"Just stay away from him Dan. I don't want to see you hurt."
"I know Chris." Dan's voice was barely a whisper. He knew he was treading on broken glass whenever he spoke to Phil, one wrong movement and he would get severely hurt beyond repair.
Yet he couldn't help it, he wanted Phil to notice him and he enjoyed the talks they had. Even if Phil didn't seem to fully enjoy them sometimes. He knew he came on too strong but that was the only way he knew to get his attention. He bet Phil didn't know half of the servants names but he knew Dan's and, at the moment, that was all that mattered. But soon that wouldn't be enough and that is what would lead him to make a move he would live to regret.
