I watch as the sister breaks down in tears, her whole body contorting as it gives up on itself. Her mouth stretches as she lets out a choked moan. The waiting room watches her as she clutches her stomach.
"We did everything we could." I say weakly.
As I guessed, it doesn't help. I resist the urge to look away. My tongue, reminiscent of a handful of clay, scratches against the roof of my mouth as I smack it.
The woman raises eyelashes weighed down with tears. "Is her husband okay?"
I raise an eyebrow and look at Mark for help.
"He successfully finished his surgery an hour ago." Mark answers, not even flinching at her question.
"Can- can I see him? Can I see Henry?" She whispers, her tears subsiding.
"Of course. Dr. Sloan and I can take you to him immediately." I shove my hands in my pockets. "I'm sorry about your sister."
"Uh huh." The woman is suddenly preoccupied. "What room is he?"
I remiss that urge to shoot another side glance towards Mark. "Right this way."
The walk was short but did not lack any awkward silences. Mark quickly knocks on a door and sticks his head in, making sure we can enter. When he shuts the door again he gives a 'go ahead' nod to the woman. She leaps at the chance to turn the knob and enter the room. I move to the door window, having to stand on my tiptoes to see.
"What are you doing, Revard?"
I make a shushing noise and back him away by wildly waving my hand.
"Revard, I-"
I whip my head around. "Mark, if you don't shut up I swear to god."
Mark looks taken aback, but impressed as well. "It's Doctor Sl-"
"Shh!"
I lean in, wiping the fog my breath creates. The woman who just lost her sister leans over the hospital bed, tucking a piece of fallen hair behind her ear. She begins to cry and sets a shaking palm on the recently widowed man. Leaning in, she places a kiss on his lips.
"Holy mother of-" I let out a screech. "I knew it! Ha!"
I pump my fists in the air and then stop. "Wow, that sure sucks for her sister."
"What?" Mark makes a quizzical look then makes his way over to the small window.
There's a pause.
"My man." He comes back to face me and let's out a soft sigh. "How did he even manage to balance them?"
"The sister was a good ass liar, that's how." I sigh, moving back to the window. "That's just sad, cheating on your wife? And she literally just died."
Mark presses behind me, trying to see the scene as well. I subconsciously hold my breath as I feel his warmth.
"I'm never getting married." Mark remarks.
"Never? I mean, sure, I've said that too. But, if I met the right person, what's holding me back?" I continue, wiping the fog from our breathing.
"I doubt I'll find the right person. The right person doesn't exist." Mark scoffs. I don't have to turn around to tell he's smirking.
"Oh, come on." I turn around and he's forced to back up.
"I didn't realize you were so soft, Revard."
"I am not soft!" I cross my arms. "You don't think there's at least one woman out there?"
"Maybe there was," Mark rolls his eyes, "but she probably got hit by a truck."
"Not even one," I raise my voice, "oh my god I love Mark Sloan! Marry me!"
"Did you just use a Jersey accent for my fake woman?"
"Yes, I pictured her from New Jersey. Fake tan, big boobs, maybe even a former Miss Jersey?"
"Really?" Mark is laughing now.
"Oh, yes. One day you'll be giving a woman her third boob job, and just as you're feeling up those hunks of plastic she will look you deep in the eyes and say... oh my god Mark I loooove you!" I raise my voice again and flail my arms.
"I'll be sure to invite you to the wedding when you're married to Karev or something." Mark fires back.
"Karev wishes." I blow a huff of air out of my pursed mouth and turn on my heel. I look back once as I walk away, "Goodbye! Remember that I loooove you!"
