Dear Mommy,

The blankets made a lot of noise, but luckily I found a knife. It isn't one of your very sharp ones, but it's better than plastic. I practiced a stabbing motion with the knife, and I'm pretty sure — don't quote me on this — that I can defend myself if I aim well enough. I know I'm not strong, but this is better than nothing.

The noises are haunting, and all I can hope is that it's coming from the house next door.  It's growing louder and louder, and my hands are shaking. My eyes are failing, darting around the room. Do you know how I feel, trapped up in this dark space, all alone?

I pray that you'll never have to find out.
