our parents always warned us

about those kids who never tried

to stay away from the temptation

but they never warned us about those who seemed nice

but only tended their own heart

and their own mind

our parents always warned us

to stay in school

to never give up on the dreams we've had since preschool

but they never warned us about reality

and how it would crush you to dust

and smoke you to bits

our parents always warned us

about the evil in the streets and the men with the coats

ready to take us from our world

but they never warned us about the danger

inside our own home

our parents always warned us

to be brave to be strong to be who we are

to do what we want before our youth dries up

but they never warned us about  the tears that run down

and the nights we would waste away worrying

till the darkness finally wins

our parents always warned us

to never love to soon

or else our bodies might not make it through

but they always warned us about the heartbreak

and never the light you might see one day

from that one special face

our parents always warned us about

the smoke in the air

the stains in our clothes

and how bad the weather is when cold

but they never warned us

about the horrid disease

when you love a stranger too much

our parents always warned us about

our charming smiles and beautiful face

the way we would run around with grace

but they never warned us

that we could be ugly too

and evil and horrid and cruel

our parents always warned us about

everything

but everythings not enough

when we finally take the road

away from the place that we've first known
