I sit in the back of my English class, listening to my music and reading. I hear the muffled voices drowned out by my earbuds. Then my name is called by Mrs. Deamer.
"Alize can you tell the class what the definition of the word 'Lacerated' is?"
I looked around me, everyone was staring! My heart gathered speed, and I just shrugged as usual. A girl in the class snickered.
"God! Alize is such a stupid bitch!"
My hands balled into fists, and my teeth clenched. I hated Carley, she was the girl who would talk shit about you in a heartbeat, or make your life a living hell; her decision for me was both. I ignored her most of my sophomore year, but this year she seemed to get to me the most.
Mrs. Snow sighed and told the class,
"Lacerated, means to cut the skin deeply with something sharp."
I put my earbuds back into my ears, and tapped my feet to the beats, occasionally I would glance up at the clock, it read 9:15. The bell rang at 9:20, 5 more agonizing minutes of Carley non-verbally harassing me... I just let it slide.
Finally the bell rang, I sprang up from my seat, and ran out into the hallway. I did not want to deal with Carley right now, not after the shit she just pulled in class. I was pushed around, or bumped as I walked down the hallway towards my locker. I saw new guy being lead around by Ms. Waters. I tried to slip past her and the new guy, but she spotted me. She called out
"You, come over here! I need you to help him get to his next class."
I didn't look at her as I glanced at his schedule, and nodded my head for him to follow me. He kept up, well maybe a little ahead. He kept asking questions on what this school was like, and how I'd managed two years of it. He stopped asking questions when me realized that I wasn't talking. We drew near his class when he said
"By the way, my name is Xavier...what's yours?"
I looked at him, and shrugged my shoulders; my response to anything and everything.
People might as well start calling me "Shrugger".
Xavier looked at me confused and said
"Come on, you gotta have a name. Everyone has one."
I pulled out my notebook and opened to the front page, I handed it over to him, he read:
"PROPERTY OF: ALIZE JADE BASTILLE"
Xavier chuckled at my name
" An alcoholic beverage, a gem, and a fortress in Paris... Seems interesting enough." He handed my notebook back to me, and I turned and walked away. I was then stopped by a hand on my shoulder. I followed the hand to Xavier's face. He said
"Don't you ever...you know... talk?"
I shook my head, and shrugged him off. I gave him a half-hearted look as the bell rang. I rushed to my class, the one I dreaded every single day; Gym class.
