d. Tricked Castiel into thinking he was closing Heaven, but instead stole his grace for a spell
Metatron led Cas to believe that he was performing trials to close Heaven, so they could sort things out amongst themselves, but we instead discover that the whole time, they weren't trials but instead ingredients to a spell. The last ingredient was Castiel's grace. (Other ingredients were Cupid's bow and a Nephilim's heart.) This spell cast all angels out of Heaven and onto Earth.
