Yvette

Then There Was One

Yvette placed her flowers down on the graves before wiping the tears away. The last of her family, the last of her kind besides her, was just laid to rest, side by side. Her grandparents, the ones who raised her from a wee infant.

She raised her head to the moon and said a little prayer, hoping that they found peace at last. With that done, she picked up the bag and headed off.

She had promised both her grandparents that she would leave the area when they passed over. They knew if one of them died, the other would soon follow. It was because they were truly bonded soul mates. Once they felt the other die, the mate bond severed and it hurt so much, it left the remaining mate to give up the will to live without their soul mate.

The mate bond severing after her grandparents had been together for close to 75 years together was understandably way too overwhelming for the remaining mate to overcome.

Yvette knew it was close to their end as soon as her grandmother Eden started having a harder time catching her breath. Her grandfather Adam settled their affairs for the end and now six months later, they were both gone. They went together in their sleep, just days after Yvette's 18th birthday.

She had graduated just a week before, so now she had no ties keeping her here. Then like her grandfather wanted, she'd finalized the sale of their home, sold what possessions were left and is now leaving.

Joshua, Yvette's only boyfriend of the last two years, had been cheating on her behind her back. She'd actually known as soon as she scented his betrayal, but as her grandmother was so sick, Yvette never said a word.

Her grandfather knew though, he told her to dump the rascal, but Yvette waited until she caught them red-handed. They were caught with their pants down and in the act, by not only her but a few others as well. That happened on graduation day, she recalled that lunch time, she called them both out on it, in front of the whole school.

Angela was outraged because she had been a steady girlfriend of Ted's, another guy who quickly dumped her on the spot and he turned to another girl who he asked to the graduation party in front of everyone.

Angela stormed out of the room angry, while Joshua was slinking off behind her. Yvette high-fived Ted and she left them to grab herself something to eat.

She never went to the graduation party, wanting to spend as much time with her grandparents as possible. She did go to her graduation ceremony though, her grandparents even showed up and were so proud as she accepted her high school diploma while they watched.

They picked up takeout and ate at home, as her grandmother was too weak for staying out any longer. Yvette was fine with that, she spent every minute she could with them.

Then days after her birthday, she went down to make breakfast and when she found her grandfather hadn't gotten up yet and made coffee, she knew then they had passed on.

She went up to their room, opened the door and found them lying in each other's arms, peacefully. She made the first call to 911 and reported her grandparents had passed on in the night.

Police showed up, followed by the medical examiner after the police called her. The police stayed with her downstairs while the medical examiner verified they had gone peacefully.

It took a day before she was given the news, that they had died of natural causes. She'd already knew that because they were both in their 90's. Once her grandmother's health declined, both her grandparents started to age fast.
