Chapter 24: Saving a life...

Chapter 24

-Finn-

I drag Peeta away from the others.

"What's up Finn?" Peeta asks and looks at me.

I know I can talk about everything with my godfather, he has proven that to me so many times. But I still don't know how to express myself, I'm still so confused.

But he does understand that's it's about her. Cassidy.

"You and Cassidy seem to have become friends again", he says fumbling to get me to start talking.

I nod.

"Yeah, I was stupid enough to promise her to stop being such an idiot towards her", I sigh. "It was really stupid".

Peeta frowns and shakes his head.

"No Finn", he says. "It's good".

"No!" I say. "No it's not, you don't understand? I've released the only shield I had against her".

"I know that Finn", Peeta says, and I know that he does, we've talked about this so many times, I can't even count. "But as I've said before, to behave badly towards her her hadn't helped you one bit".

"I know, but now I have nothing to even try to keep my emotions away", I say sadly. "As she gets older, I'm gonna be totally run over by my feelings!"

Peeta says nothing but just smiles at me.

"Are you sure that you're not just afraid of love?" He asks.

Huh? What does he mean, afraid of love?

"No I'm not", I say.

"But Finn it seems that way", Peeta says. "You're talking about that you don't have a shield to protect yourself with from your emotions that will run over you when Cassidy gets older, admit it, you're afraid, and it's okay to be afraid Finn".

I just stand and look at him. Could he be right? Am I afraid of falling in love with Cassidy when she gets older?

"What am I going to do?" I ask. "What am I going to do?"

"Finn there nothing you can do", Peeta says and put a hand on my shouder. "If you fall in love with her, you just do, and it's nothing you can control".

"But I'm so much older than her", I say.

"For the time being, but when she's sixteen/seventeen, it won't matter Finn, remember that you're only five years older", he says. "And that's okay, it's not dangerous to be in love, it's a good thing".

"Says the guy who has been in love with the same girl since he was five years old", I say sarcastically.

Peeta laughs.

"Yeah I have, and therefore I know", Peeta says with a smile. "It hasn't been easy for me, I didn't dare to talk to her, so you are in a much better situation then I was, we had to end up in the Hunger Games for me to talk to her, so trust me, it'll work out for you Finn, in time".

I just stare at him. He's so totally right. He really is a man of words.

I don't know what to say, so I just hug him instead.

Peeta always says the right things, maybe that's why I trust him more them anyone else with these things.

"Have I ever told you that you're the world's best godfather?" I ask him as we begin to move towards the others.

"Everyday when you were little", Peeta laughs.

"What were you talking about?" My mother asks when we walk up to her and Katniss.

I look at Peeta and he shakes his head to them.

"It's a secret between a godfather and his godson", he says seriously, and I know that he'll always cover for me, he's never going to reveal me.

We're out on the parking lot where the driver is outside the car, waiting for us.

And that's when I see it. A car coming in way too fast speed. If it dosen't slow down right now, he'll drive over ... Cassidy! NO!

"Cassidy!" I scream and run towards her.

She turns around with her long hair fluttering around her and smiles. She doesn't see the car.

I come up to her and pull her away. We plunge hard straight into the ground and I keep a firm grip on her. The car drives past us the second I got her away just an inch from us and I keep my tears inside ... if I had been one second late for her ... she would be ... be dead.

"Finn! Cassidy!" The others screams and runs up to us.

We're still on the ground. I keep Cassidys head against my shoulder with my hand while I keep her close to me with my other hand. She's crying on my shoulder. She's scared.

Peeta begins to pry my hands from Cassidy, so that we can be able to stand up. But I don't let her go. To me it feels like the danger isn't gone yet, even though it probably is.

"Finn let her go, she's safe now", Peeta says softly to me, but I don't believe him. "You saved her, she's safe, it's okay to let go now".

And this is when I release my grip.

Cassidy is directly carried up by Pollux and I throw myself into my mothers arms. She's mumbling soothing words even though I'm not crying, but I need those words right now, I was so close to lose Cassidy only a minute ago.

"You saved her Finn, oh thank you so, so, so much, we won't be able to thank you enough", Felice says crying mildly.

Pollox is standing beside her nodding. Cassidy is standing beside him with her hand in a tight grip on her fathers. She's pale in her face and tears are still flowing from her beautiful eyes. But she looks straight at me, stiff as a statue.

"As long as she's safe", I say, looking at Cassidy, but it was Felice I said it to.

I open my arms and she enters without hasitation.

"Thank you", she mumbles, and I kiss her head. "Thank you for saving me Finn. Again".

I know that she talks about yesterday at school, when she says 'again'.

"Anytime Cassidy", I say and I know it's true, I'll always save her if she needs me to.

We stand there for a little while before Plutarch calls out to us that we should go now.

Everyone are quiet in the car, unsure if they should say something. I understand them, I mean if I hadn't thrown myself and Cassidy on the ground we would both be dead now.

Willow seems to know that it's a bit tense because she starts shouting loud and clear with her cute voice.

"They didn't die, they're here, so laugh a little".

And of course that makes us all laugh and Willow looks proud of herself.

Peeta pulls her to him and hungs her.

"You're our little encourager Willow", he says and she laughs.

"You know it Papa", she says, patting him on the cheek before she gives him a big wet kiss on the nose.
