Elizabeth's POV
The team were currently trying to decide on what we're gonna do about Icarus 1."Do I have to spell it out for you?", Mace said starting to get frustrated. "We have a payload to deliver to the heart of our nearest star. We're delivering that payload, because that star is dieing and if it dies, we die. Everyone dies! So that is our mission there's nothing. LITERALLY! NOTHING'S more important than completing our mission. End of story!"
"He's right." "OF COURSE I'M RIGHT! Is anyone else here seriously considering otherwise?", Mace said proving his point.
"May I put a counter aguement?", Searle asked Kameda.
"NO!" "Mace!", I yelled at him. Now he feels bad and calms down a little bit.
"Captain?" "Go ahead.",Kaneda said answering Searle.
"It would, of course, be absurd to alter our trajectory to assist the crew of the Icarus 1. Even if we knew if some or even all of that crew is alive, their lives are entirely expendable when seen in a context of our mission. As well our own lives." "Exactly.", Mace said agreeing with Searle.
"However, there is something on board Icarus 1 that may be worth the detour. As you pointed out, Mace, we have a payload to deliver. A payload. Singular. Now, everything about the delivery and effectiveness of that payload is entirely theoretical. So basically, we don't know if it's gonna work.", Searle said summing up his argument. "BUT what do know is this. If we had two bombs, we'd have two chances."
"So you're assuming we'd be able to pilot Icarus 1?", I asked. Is he serious?
"Yes." "Which is assuming that whatever stopped them completing the mission wasn't a fault or damage to the spacecraft." "Yes.", Searle said now answering Harvey's question.
"That's a lot of assumptions." "It is, but it's a risky assessment. The question is: Does the risk of the detour outweigh the benefits of an extra payload?", Searle said to Mace. He made a good point.
"We'll have a vote.", Mace said breaking the silence.
"No. No, we won't. We're not a democracy. We're collection of astronauts and scientist. So, we're gonna make the most informed decision available to us." "Do you mean you by any chance?", Mace said frustrated.
"He's the best person qualified to understand the complexity of payload delivery.", Kaneda said. I don't like where this is going at all, but if it means a successful delivery, then so be it. We finally go our separate ways. I grab Mace's hand and lead him to our room.
"What was that back there, Mace? Everyone can do without your bickering." "Bickering?! Did that not sound crazy to you? We could get killed!", Mace shouted.
"I get that you're worried, we all are, but we have to do what's best for the mission. If the cap thinks that's best then we just have to accept it. Please try to understand, for me.", I said grabbing his face with both hands and placing my forehead on his. He then held my wrist and leaned into my touch, taking a deep breath in then out.
"Alright. I'll try.", he said making you smile. You placed a kiss on his nose then his kissed him. We went to bed for some well needed rest.
