Chapter Thirteen
Cook Out and Lies
The next month went by smooth and the days were all the same, hung out with Lexi, Hannah, or Mandy until Bryson got off work and then was with him the rest of the time. A minute we were together I fell in love with him more and more.
It was a nice late summer afternoon; I was outside in my white sundress and white heels with my hair in curls. The ranch hands were all gathered around for Lexi and Steve’s annual summer barbeque for the workers. The weather was perfect and behind the house we had bunches of tables sit up and a grill. Landon was here earlier but then he disappeared once at Bryson showed up, that was weird.
“Hey, Bentley can you go grab some more hotdogs from the kitchen?” Lexi asked as she walked over to stand beside Steve behind the smoking grill.
“Yeah,” I said and headed towards the kitchen, but froze when I heard Mandy and Bryson’s voice coming from in the kitchen. I wasn’t going stand there and spied but then Mandy said something that grabbed my attention.
“Here, Bryson, it’s enough for you to go to that college,” Mandy voice said and I heard some shuffling.
“What?” I heard Bryson ask.
“It was part the deal,” Mandy said, but what deal is she freaking talking about. “You talked to Bentley and got her out of her shell. You did a great job, so here’s your money.” She finished.
I slipped my feet out of my heels preparing to run, but first I flung open the door to the kitchen.
“It was all a bet?” I asked as tears began to rush down my cheeks.
“No- well yes- but,” he started and I raised my hand to stop him. I was shaking and crying.
“You just gave me my answer! We are over,” I cried and I felt my heart shatter. I turned around and ran, I ran faster than I thought was ever possible. I had run through the crowd of people and all the way into the woods. Tears streamed down my face and I fell to my knees in a small opening in the woods.
I could hear soft music playing from a tear and the sun was going down so I stood up with tear still running down my face and looked around. Finally my eyes spotted a tree house that had light coming out of it. So I walk over slowly and quietly, climbing up the latter and lifted the door open pulling myself inside and shutting the door behind me. There with his back up against a green bean bag chair, in a nice white and grey dress shirt and dress jeans with his blonde hair in its perfect place. His blue eyes starred at my tear covered face. Landon quickly reached over and flipped off the radio.
“Bentley, are you ok?” he asked as he placed his hands on my shoulders.
“It was all a bet. He lied and I broke up with him,” I cried and he pulled me into a hug.
“Your ok Bentley, you still have me,” he said as he ran his hand over my head,
Landon pulled away a little bit and starred down at my, I looked up at him through teary eyes. He leaned his lips down a little closer to my lips. My breath caught in my throat because he was so close I could smell his minty sweet breath. His lips inched closer to me and then his lips pressed against mine.
Even though my heart is shattered in thousands of pieces and tears were streaming down my face, the tear is so perfect. I don’t know if it’s because I have always longed for his lips to be on mine or the fact that it was Landon. Finally I pulled away and ad one of his hands still rested on the side of my face he leaned his forehead down onto mine.
Tears still streamed down my face and I laid my head down on his chest and stretched out in between his legs and he wrapped his arms around my waist. I shut my eyes and wished that I had never meet Bryson.
I felt a blanket drape over me and I shifted in Landon’s strong arms. He stroked my hair and kissed my forehead.
“You’ll always have me,” his sweet voice whispered.
