Mary and Sam

12 1 1

Wind hums a song.
Gently stirs her hair
while she's sitting on the grass
of a fancy park with black lamp posts.
With a cobblestoned path
colored silver.
Lined with daisies and petunias.
She sits there expectant
waiting for him to arrive.
Wide brown eyes of a child,
slender hands pick out flowers
killing them instantly.

He's late again for their date
smiles fade in the blink of time.
Maybe he forgot..
In taking a breath of fresh clean air,
Mary collapsed on to plush green grass.
Grass tickled her skin while rays of the sun stung like acid.

Moments later did her eyes
catch him on the horizon
of her serene blue skies.
Short locks dangled
in red leaves.
A glint of green
sparkled as emeralds
were being made in his eyes.

He was outstretching his hand
with a warm smile
as freckles stood out
from the rooftops
of his nose and cheekbones.

"May I say..I was not late. You simply arrived early."
Sam's laugh was light and carefree.
Light and easy as leaves drift off trees
in the cool wind of Fall.

When he saw Mary wouldn't take his hand, he simply smiled and layed down next to her.
Sam's voice was sweet as maple syrup.
"Are you mad at me?"
Lips curved into a smirk.

Mary was relaxed, gazing at the clouds above as they gently inched closer out of her sight. Not a word was heard from her till then.

"Well..I'm going to take a nap. Make sure no dog mistakes my hair for a fire hydrant and pees on me."

She felt his presence slowly slip away from reality. As he closed his eyes and faded in to a dream state. As if his tensions were soaked in by the ground.

How can someone be so carefree?
How could he sleep at a time like this?
In a park? He's strange.

"You were late again."
Words were muttered out after periods of silence.

"I love you too Mary"
Without opening his eyes he mumbled with a smile.

His arms were at the back of his Ronald McDonald hair. She remembered calling him that one time, he simply responded.
"And? I like it..so, I have it this way".

His way of words and actions at times (most times) reminded Mary of a young sassy child. With his t shirts of superheros, flannels, ripped blue jeans, and sneakers. His usual casual, lazy attire. Well, maybe not lazy since he practically lives in soccer fields kicking around the ball till it hurts someone, himself, or makes a goal.
But that rarely happens.

Gazing up at the puffs of white..
she was somehow reminded of distinct childhood memories. The feeling of starting all over again..Pressing the reset button and never looking back.

Leaving her friends and loved ones behind in this new chapter. Pages began to run dry again..Maybe she was close to the next chapter in her life again? Will Sam be in it though? Starting from scratch with no one but her shadow. Does it have to be that way again?

Feels like I'm hanging out with a best friend..Maybe it is that way. Well that'd be okay too I guess.

"I love you three."

Mary whispered in the Fall wind.
As her worries slowly dissolved
and melted in this distant heat.

Under the rays of the Sun,
shade from a youthful tree,
staring down an empty gun..
she began to understand
her life would never be
the same ever again.

"You know I was never asleep, right?"
Sam spoke softly to not disturb leaves as they helplessly cling onto trees.

"Just because your eyes are closed doesn't mean you're asleep. I know that."
