I race out of my dad's office and into the living room where I turn on the local station. I immediately recognize one of the detectives that had questioned me at my school.

"What's going on?" I say. "What's he talking about?"

Mikey laughs on the other end. "Your Japanese is still that bad?"

"Mikey!"

"Sorry, I'm just so-Aagh! She's alive. Look, look."

The TV cuts away from the detective to a shot of a hooded Miyako, surrounded by cameras, walking towards an awaiting vehicle.

"What the hell?" I murmer. "She looks totally fine."

"They say she ran away," Mikey says. "Stress from exams. Apparently, it happens all the time with third year students."

"So then, all suspects have been cleared, right?"

"Well, probably."

I sigh in relief as I watch Miyako's face, a mixture of awe and flattery before she disapears into the car. "This whole thing has been a nightmare. Do you know what this means, Mikey? My dad is coming home! Mikey?"

I bring my phone down from my ear. Dropped call.

"Whatever," I say to the empty room, focusing again on the TV.

My body tenses up as the screen reflects movement behind me.

Maybe the nightmare isn't over yet. There's someone in the house.
