We parted our faces and turned our heads towards the woman at the entrance of the door. The look on her face made it seem like she had just seen a ghost. I quickly looked away from her eyes that were filled with a bit of anger.

"Ola," I heard his mother say.

I kept looking at Cristiano, a little worried of the tension in the room.

Don't worry about it, he mouthed to me. He stood up and walked over to his mother and hugged her. She still did not look pleased.

"Cristiano, can we talk in the other room?"

I could feel the awkwardness in the room; the feeling that she didn't want to talk to me or look at me. Cristiano shot me an apologetic look and walked away with his mom, leaving me alone in the living room.

The silence in the room filled the air. My thoughts began to make me feel a bit anxious. I knew they were talking about me... nothing good either I assumed by the way she was looking at me. I took a deep breath to calm me down. I didn't want to overthink it, because it probably wasn't even that bad. I got up from the couch and decided to check on the boys, who were playing outside in the backyard.

When I walked outside, the boys were running, kicking a soccer ball around. I smiled and walked a bit further onto the grass.

"Mae!" Carlos called out. "Be on my team!"

"We can play two-on-two!" Junior butted in.

Josue ran up to me and asked the same question his brother did.

"Hmm," I said, putting a finger to my chin. "How about I go with Junior, and play against you boys?"

Their faces lit up. I had honestly thought they wouldn't like the idea, but they seemed excited. Junior smiled up at me as my boys ran off to plan a play-by-play. Junior and I stayed where we were, and discussed possible strategies to win. Once we had finished, the game started.

For a child who was 7 years old, he knew very well how to play soccer. It's almost as if he was born with natural talent. Cristiano definitely taught him well. However, my sons were a bit rough around the edges. Their father, Damien, never took the time to play with them or teach them about sports. Anything they know now, is from self-teaching. Which I didn't mind, because they were doing a great job at learning all these things by themselves.

Right in the middle of the game, Cristiano walked out into the backyard alone. I looked over at him, just as I felt the ball touch my foot. I looked down and then up at Junior, trying to figure out how to pass it over to him, since both Josue and Carlos were blocking me.

"Pass!" I heard Cristiano yell. He was already halfway onto the turf, when I kicked the ball as hard as I could. Right when he 'caught' the ball, he dribbled it down the field and into the goal.

Junior yelled out in excitement, jumping into his father's arms. Carlos and Josue decided to join in on the celebration, even though they didn't win. I smiled at the sweet moment of victory... At that moment I felt a bit... happy. It was a strange thing to say, since I had just met Cristiano and Junior less than 24 hours ago.

"I think it's best if you stay away from my son."

I jumped a little when I heard the voice of someone standing next to me. I hadn't noticed Cristiano's mom right by me, since I was lost in my thoughts.

"Excuse me?" I said, realizing what she had just told me.

"Cris, he has a lot on his plate right now, and the last thing he needs is a little girlfriend on his side."

"I'm not his girlfriend."

"You are to the public. I just read online about what happened at the restaurant," she stopped her sentence there, but I knew she wasn't done talking. "Listen, I just don't think you two would be a good match, so I suggest you end whatever is going on before it gets worse."

My jaw should have just dropped from the shocked feeling I had, but I just decided to keep quiet and nod. I didn't quite understand why she had brought any of that up. We were just friends, if you could even call us that. We had just met, how was it possible other people thought we were together. Especially his mom... I wasn't trying to get in the way of anything, but if it was best for Cristiano, then so be it.

"Carlos! Josue!" I called out. "Let's go!"

Without questioning it, my boys stopped in their tracks and made their way to me.

"Leaving so soon?" Cristiano said, walking up to me with the boys.

"Uh yeah," I said, trying to ignore his mother's glares at me. "I have a lot to do tomorrow, so I need to go rest up."

"Oh okay," he said, sounding a bit disappointed. "Here, let me walk you to the door."

I collected my things and walked through the house to the front door.

"I had a great time today," Cris said, opening the door.

"Me too."

"We should do it again sometime." I was able to hear the eagerness in his voice.

I took a deep breath. "I don't think that's a good idea."

"Why not?"

"I don't want to get in the middle of anything... Thank you for today."

I didn't let him respond. I quickly walked through the door with my boys, leaving Cristiano at the door frame.
