We went with Smalls to see how his dad would react to the situation we were just in.

Bill loved the Murderers Row ball, but he was still mad at Smalls for taking his Babe Ruth autographed ball and ruining it.

Smalls got grounded for a week.

We were all a big team through Junior Highschool.

Every summer was Great, but none ever came close to that first one.

The time of my life was with these eight boys.

We visited Mr. Mertle every week like we promised, sometimes even twice a week.

The guys started moving away when we entered Highschool.

When one guy would move away, we never replaced him on the team with anyone else.

We just kept the game going like he was still there.

***

We had made Hercules our little mascot of our team.

That was out team name "Hercules".

***
We kept in touch with each other.

Yeah yeah was the first to move away.

Turns out his parents shipped him off to Military School.

After the Army, he became one of the pioneer developers of bungee jumping.

We all knew why.

Bertram moved second.

He got really into the 60's, and no one ever saw him again.

Timmy and Tommy moved third and became an architect and a contractor.

They started small by designing playground equipment and prefabricated tree houses but they became millionaires when they invented mini-malls.

Squints moved fourth.

He grew up and married Wendy Peffercorn.

They have nine kids.

They bought Vincent's drug store and they still own it to this day.

Ham moved fifth.

Hamilton Porter became a professional wrestler.

You know him as "The Great Hambino".

DeNuniez played triple-A ball but he never got to the majors.

He owns his own business now, and he coaches a little league team that his sons play on called the Heaters.

Hercules lived to be 199 years old.

In doggy years.

Smalls was the last one to move away.

Hardest day of my life.

Benny and I never moved.

But mine and Benny's reputation on how we pickled the beast spread all over town and we were known as "The Jet" couple.

Even though we never moved we always went to the Sandlot and practiced so Benny can make it to the Big Leagues.

I played Softball in Highschool because the stupid coaches wouldn't let me on the baseball team.

Benny and I always stayed together and always supported each other.

***

He finally made it to the Big Leagues and the nickname still stuck.
