"The brightness of the sun
Will give me just enough,
To bury my love
In the moondust.
I long to hear your voice,
But still I make the choice
To bury my love
In the moondust."
•••
Obi-Wan Kenobi opened his eyes at dawn.
The steady hum of Coruscant traffic had calmed in the early morning, and Obi-Wan glanced out his small window at the quite city.
He stood up from his sleeping mat, his back aching.
He never had gotten used to sleeping on the hard surface every night.
He quietly meditated for 30 minutes, preparing himself for the day.
He reached into the Force, asking it to give him strength and peace.
Tomorrow they would be leaving for Naboo on a diplomatic mission. They would be meeting up with Padmé and the other Senators to discuss the war.
He pulled on his robes and attached his lightsaber to his belt.
He went to the small kitchen to get breakfast.
Anakin was sitting there already, staring vacantly out a window.
"Anakin." Obi-Wan acknowledged Anakin with a curt tone.
"Good morning Master." Anakin said with a nod.
Anakin's short hair was a ruffled mess, sticking up all over the place.
"Did you do your meditation?" The older man asked.
"Of course Master. You don't have to remind me." Anakin said, annoyed.
He wasn't a baby.
They ate a small breakfast together in silence.
Anakin seemed eager to spar.
"Let's go." Anakin said enthusiastically.
"Patience, young one." Obi-Wan said.
"I'm not young though." Anakin said angrily.
All Obi-Wan did was treat him like a child! He wanted to be treated as equal to Obi-Wan.
Finally, they arrived at the training rooms.
"Let's do something different today Padawan. Instead of fighting each other, we should fight together." Obi-Wan said.
"How exactly do you plan on doing that?"
Anakin asked.
Obi-Wan sat down, and crossed his legs.
"Sit behind me. Our backs should be touching. Close your eyes. Let the Force flow through us."
Anakin did this reluctantly.
They sat with their backs together.
Obi-Wan reached through their bond.
Anakin lowered his shields, and their minds joined.
Obi-Wan's mind was so pure and bright it almost blinded Anakin.
Obi-Wan felt a surge of pure, untouched power surge through him. That was Anakin.
There was no light or dark in Anakin, only the Force.
Two minds became one as the Jedi merged.
Anakin's eyes flew open, and they dueled.
Anakin became lost in Obi-Wan's mind, and Obi-Wan in Anakin's.
Both of them knew exactly what the other was going to do.
Each blow, sidestep and parry.
They were perfectly matched.
The twin blue blades crashed again and again.
The other Jedi in the training room watched in awe as the powerful Jedi trained for hours.
Time had no meaning as they trained.
Their blades of energy spun through the air, like lightning.
Their bodies tired, but not their minds
It was only Anakin and Obi-Wan.
Obi-Wan and Anakin.
Finally, Anakin called out for a break, and the one mind became two.
They stood on the mat, inches apart, breathing hard.
Anakin's head was reeling, and he almost blacked out for a moment.
Sweat dripped down Anakin's face.
Obi-Wan took a deep breath.
"Well done." Obi-Wan said warmly.
Anakin smiled at the rare praise from his Master.
"Where...in the Galaxy...did you learn how to do that?" Anakin asked between breaths.
"I've picked up a few tricks in my time" Obi-Wan said with a smirk.
Anakin sat down, exhausted.
"I couldn't tell the difference between my head and yours. That was scary, but cool."
Obi-Wan sat down beside Anakin, and suddenly became very aware that their thighs were touching.
Anakin looked over at Obi-Wan, his hair tangled and his face sweaty.
It was kind of...hot?
Anakin suddenly had the urge to rest his head on Obi-Wan's shoulder, and he did.
Obi-Wan was quite surprised, but then he smiled to himself.
Anakin could be very affectionate sometimes.
"Good job today Padawan." Obi-Wan said.
"I know you will be ready for the trials soon. You already have faced many great challenges. The trials will be no different."
"Thank you Master." Anakin said with a smile.
"Anakin," Obi-Wan said, putting a hand on his knee "you really don't have to call me that anymore."
Anakin just smiled at Obi-Wan.
He felt his heart flutter softly.
Anakin then frowned, and stood up abruptly, severing the contact.
"I need to go shower and pack for Naboo tomorrow. I'll see you later Master."
"Bye Anakin." Obi-Wan said.
Anakin was acting super weird. One second he was affectionate, and then distant.
This kind of hurt Obi-Wan's feelings.
But Obi-Wan knew he was acting similarly.
And then, it hit Obi-Wan like a train.
Why Anakin's actions were impacting him so much.
Obi-Wan had a crush on Anakin Skywalker.
He had for some time now.
Of course Obi-Wan loved Anakin, but never in a romantic way. It had always been platonic and brotherly.
Obi-Wan watched as his apprentice walked out the door.
Obi-Wan had to admit, Anakin was cute. But everyone knew that.
It was his hair, and defined features that made Anakin one of the most attractive people Obi-Wan had met.
But then his faint grin turned to a frown.
This was wrong.
It was not unusual for Padawans to crush on their masters, not the other way around.
He was quite a bit older than Anakin as well.
Most importantly, he knew his feelings were not mutual.
Anakin seemed to be also crushing on someone, he had felt it when their minds melded, even though Anakin had kept those feelings under tight wraps.
He presumed it was Padmé. The beautiful Senator had won over many hearts.
Obi-Wan thought Anakin must be very excited to see her.
Obi-Wan decided he should meditate later and release his attachments in the Force.
That is the Jedi way.
But for possibly the first time in his life, his feelings for Anakin caused him not to want to follow the Code.
But it wouldn't be the last.
