The truck moved through the campus at a slow speed and I had to fight not to yell at the guard to get a move on. I guess I could understand his hesitancy to get to work especially after the way the other guard lit into him. However at the same time, we needed to be back inside our dorm rooms before anyone noticed—especially Taylor with Karen being her roommate. I could only imagine the frenzy that would run through her when she went to shake Taylor's hologram awake.
"Could he move any slower, it's already seven!" Yuri fussed staring down at her phone. The light lit up the dark space of the truck.
"I know right." I said shaking my head. "Taylor, how are our holograms doing? Have they been disturbed?"
Taylor pulled out her Ipad that was linked to our holograms. "No, they are still asleep. Karen is in the shower. I am however worried about Kerry's roommate. She's getting her clothes together but she keeps giving Kerry's sleeping form glances."
"Oh God." Kerry sighed running her hands over her face. "For once Tay please don't be nosy."
"Does she always checks on you when you're sleep?" I asked concerned.
Kerry shook her head. "No, but that's because I'm usually up running by now." The three of us gave Kerry a look. "What" She asked confused.
Taylor popped her upside her head. "Now you tell me you're supposed to be out running. I could have made your hologram disappear early and we wouldn't even be in this mess."
Kerry smiled bashfully. "Sorry you guys."
I shook my head. "Never mind that. Taylor what can we do to throw off her suspicion?"
Taylor bit her lip for a moment as she stared down at the screen. "Well since she's getting ready to go shower, we can wait for her to enter the bathroom for a few minutes, and then I'll make Kerry's hologram disappear though I'm pretty sure you are going to have one hell of a story to tell her when you get back Kerry."
"Don't worry, I'll think of something." Kerry said.
"Good. Until then we just keep our heads down and make it to our dorms before anyone notice. We'll have more time to get showered since we already stopped for breakfast. Just make sure you keep your mouth closed and all of this will smooth over."
The four of us stayed huddle together waiting for Kerry's roommate to give up on checking on her and go shower.
"Okay, she's gone." Taylor said staring at the screen. "Now to remove Kerry's hologram from the bed. Done and done."
"If she asks, I'll just tell her I went out for a run." Kerry said. "I'll tell her I overslept because I wasn't feeling that well and thought a run might help me feel better. That's halfway true because it kind of does."
"I'll also get rid of my hologram." Taylor added. "Karen is taking forever in the shower and I kind of sense it's because she wants to use up all the hot water from me. By then, I'll be gone from the bed and she'll just be left curious."
Our conversation cut off at the feel of the truck coming to a stop. We were back behind the custodial building. The doors to the truck opened as Pat and the Ricky climbed out the front. Ricky was still going on about how this was it for him. Pat had stopped trying to comfort him and was now recommending that he come in for a coffee. She was trying to get him away from the truck so we could leave. I just hope she get him to open the back first or we'll be stuck here forever.
"Okay, I'll have that coffee." Ricky said. "I guess every man on death row gets to have his last meal."
"Oh nonsense, you'll be fine." Pat said.
