Chapter Three

This wasn’t a part of the plan. I had hoped Aro would greet us, appoint us to our rooms, and leave us in peace. It appears I couldn’t be more wrong. I took in every molecule inside of the room as Chloe stood by my side, frozen in what I could only guess was shock. My whole demeanour had changed from the moment the realisation hit me; I was also frozen in place, it appeared I couldn’t bring myself to even take a breath. It felt as if the tension within the room was crushing my windpipe. I couldn't form any words, as my mouth wasn't letting me speak. I must speak, it’s the only way I could stop Aro from hurting my best friend. Slowly, I somehow managed to break through the ice barrier and stretch my hand out, knowing my mind could help to show Aro what my voice refused to announce. Aro moved forward and snatched my hand greedily. It angered me, if only slightly, and had my inner voice sharper than I had intended. Don’t abuse your power, Aro. I merely cannot form words yet as I am still in deep shock. I was under the impression that I was allowed to bring a companion with me on this trip. Am I wrong? The man himself now seemed frozen in shock to which I could not help but smile, if only a little.

I also couldn’t help but feel slightly proud of myself. I’d caused one of the most terrifying vampires to hesitate and stumble over their next thoughts. I was tempted to delve into his mind, but thought it best not to as he could kill me quicker than he could kill Chloe. After a moment he finally spoke. “Such courage in you, I see. You are truly a Cullen through blood, spirit, and soul. What on earth gave you that impression, dear child?”

Jane and Alec quite clearly stated I and one friend of my choice may come to Italy to spend a few months here. Must I show you the conversation, or will you continue looking without my permission as you have been this entire exchange? His laughter echoed throughout the room and I found myself attempting not to flinch. This man was a lunatic. He didn’t make sense. Something not making sense was a rare thing for me as I understood most anything, thanks to my family. I couldn’t understand it. This man's mind was so complex, it had myself craving to get a small peak into the amazing ability of Aro Volturi.

“My very own told you so, hm? I suppose I shall ask to see the memory instead of barging in, especially since you could feel myself scraping around. Let us divulge in the memory together?” I nodded my head once before opening up my mind, allowing him to see the ins and outs of the past two days. I did, however, leave out my dream. I planned not to tell another soul to which I had dreamed earlier this evening. It was confusing and would give people the wrong idea. Besides, I didn’t understand the dream myself. In fact, the reminder of the dream somewhat terrified me. “Magnifico.” I was surprised at the sense of deja vu I experienced in this moment. I found myself so surprised I pulled away from Aro and took a step back.

“It appears you have become fascinated with me in the same manner you did fifteen years previous. I have shown you what you wanted to see. Must I send Chloe home?” Aro's gaze never left me as he seemed to be thinking about something important.

“Renesmee child, you know the consequences of a human knowing of our kind. It is death or Vampirism for your friend now. I shall let you decide. It was your family whom have had loose lips once again.” As I was about to retaliate another voice penetrated loud and clear in the room.

“The Cullens’ didn't reveal themselves to me. I witnessed my brothers death when we were living in Seattle at the time of the major death rate exposure. I knew then vampires existed. I met the Cullens’ a few years ago and I hated them at first, but I realised they were different to others of their kind. The Cullens’ are completely innocent, but I won’t be changed into a demon such as yourself. It would kill me knowing I was the very creature that killed my brother, but I won’t die. I’ve known of the existence of vampires for almost sixteen years, what the hell makes you think I’ll suddenly blow your secret now?” I bit my lip, surprised at the courage Chloe had gained. I watched silently, worried for the reaction of the Volturi, or more, Aro. The thoughts hurled through my mind at a hundred miles per hour, and in each one I couldn’t see a single positive reaction to Chloe's outburst. This was terrible. It appeared I wasn’t quick enough though.
