Cara was about to exit the building before Lexi ran up behind her and caught her by the shoulder.
"Hey, where are you going? I'm your ride home."
Catching her breath and remembering Lexi did not know what had just happened, Cara stuttered through her second lie of the evening, "Simon. I have to return a call."
"You okay?"
Cara hated how well Lexi knew her and how she could sniff out a lie an emotional mile away. "I'm fine."
"What about you and that other dude? What were guys up to?" Lexi didn't let go of Cara's shoulder, she left the weight of her hand keep her still.
"Ummm, I mean, truth is, is that, he...um...he kissed me and I had to leave."
"He kissed you! Oh my God--,"
"Lexi, please, it's not going anywhere further and it was just something that happened. But, I have to call Simon." Breaking from her friend's somewhat now baffled expression, she fled outside the building and out onto the New York streets.
Holding her hand over her mouth and pacing back and forth, phone in her other hand, she tried to figure out what she should do. Peter's intentions were not what she had imagined, but exactly what she had feared. Wiping the tears away, she looked at her phone and the recently missed call. A voicemail had been left.
Clicking the icon to open her voicemail box, she held the phone against her ear, shaking as she waited for the message.
"Hey, Cara, I saw you had tried to call. Sorry to have missed it, I'm on break. You can call me if you can. I love and miss you. Bye."
A tear made it down her cheek and she flicked it away with her thumb. She couldn't call Simon. She knew he would read her voice and demand what had made her so upset. Exhaling, she turned to return inside before she Peter approaching her.
"Don't talk to me," Cara growled, trying to dodge him on her way inside.
But he caught her hand and said sincerely, "Cara, please, I'm so sorry. You felt something, and I did to. Please, tell me you did."
