Some sites Team Royal uses to make book covers are Canva, PicMonkey, and PhotoBucket. We don't use PhotoBucket that much because their services are limited and quite frankly, bad. Canva is our favorite and we use this more for the cover of a book (the background, text, etc.) while PicMonkey is great for lighting and colors. All these websites are ones that are free (however, you can get more with membership) and you don't need to download them.

One thing that readers look for in a book is the effort that is put into the cover. Be unique with your cover, don't put your title at the top, your main picture, and then you name. Sometimes, be literal with your title and cover. For example, a book here on Watt Pad is called The Falling Of Man, with a stick figure upside down.

The graphs and charts that your story gives is also valuable. If the majority of your readers are boys, (which rarely happens) then your target audience  should be boys, meaning that you would try to produce 'manly' things.
