Chapter 4
We reached the training room Mrs Fitzgerald sent us to and when I walked through the door, I found myself in an extremely large high ceilinged room. There was blue padding covering the entire floor and all of the walls, and there were a few dummies standing in the far back corner of the room. There were also a few buttons on one of the walls which were obviously to control extra things in the room. I started taking off my high heeled boots because in order to actually learn something I'm going to have to be able to stay standing on my feet.
"Ok, let's get this straight I don't like this anymore than you do, so lets just start with your ability to bend and element, since that's the only thing we have in common." Jace said moving to the centre of the room.
I started moving towards him. When all of a sudden I was hit and flung against one of the padded walls by a large orange flame. When I tried to stand up I found my hands shaking uncontrollably. I can't believe he just did that.
"Are you out of your fucking mind?! You just tried to set me on fire!" I yelled at him, then he burst out laughing...laughing?!
"Relax Lanie, I wasn't trying to set you on fire, if I was, the flame would've come out blue. The orange flame is a tame one it's kinda like a force field, it will only send you flying back" he said trying to hold back another round of laughter.
"Well that's great to know (sarcasm) and don't call me Lanie, it sounds stupid" I said glaring at him. Jeez at least my nick name for him is a bit more original.
"Come on, show me a force field" he said walking towards me and when he was a few inches away he whispered, "or do you need a little bit of help?"
"I do need help but not in the way you're thinking" I said looking up at him, while taking a step back. And I saw his features soften a bit.
"Ok then, I will teach you how to make a wall out of a force field in front of you. It's just like how I'm able to make a wall of fire" he said taking a step back and then all of a sudden there was a sheet of flames starting from the top of his head going down to his feet and then just as quick, it was gone.
"Now close your eyes, calm yourself, feel all of the anger and tension leave you. Then start from the top of your head and imagine yourself pulling down a shutter all the way down to your feet." And so I did exactly what he told me to do, and I could feel the invisible energy sliding in front of me. I opened my eyes and kept my expression neutral.
"Do you know if it worked?" Jace asked.
"I don't know, try running towards me" I said trying to keep a straight face.
"Alright then" he said and started moving back to the middle of the room, and then he started charging towards me. He collided with my force field so hard that it sent him flying all the way back to the other end of the room and smashing him into the padded wall.
I couldn't hold it in any longer, I doubled over and lost it laughing. I swear tears were running down my face. Serves him right for pulling that fire trick on me, now we're even. He started to get up and when I saw the look of pure anger on his face I just laughed harder.
"I can't believe you fucking did that, you could've killed me!" he yelled.
"You...were the one who...fell for it...in the first place...i mean who comes...running full bolt...into a force field?" I said in between laughs.
I was still bent over to try and catch my breath. So when the lights suddenly turned off, I stood straight up, shitting myself. My only fear is being in the dark, I know lame. But it makes me feel helpless, because it's the only time my powers won't be able to help me, it's like they've been switched off until the lights come back on. This was one of those situations, I just stood there frozen, and finally I managed to get my voice working and called out,
"Jace? Are you still here?" I said fear clearly heard in my voice.
"I thought the great Showalter daughter didn't have any fears, boy was I wrong" he said somewhere over to my right.
"Stop mucking around and turn the lights back on" I said with a bit of anger in my voice.
"No, I think we should train in the dark, you seem to show more determination this way" he said with a bit of humour in his voice. Then all of a sudden I was pinned to the ground by Jace. He was holding a fire ball in his right hand while his left was holding me down. I started squirming, trying to get out of his grip, but was failing.
"Listen, you need to learn how to defend yourself, because there are worse things out there than me. They are most likely to attack you at night, where you won't be able to see them. Do you understand me?" he said pleading me to understand what he was saying, and was that concern in his eyes? I must be imagining it.
"Yes" I said. He nodded, got up off me and then the lights came back to life.
"We should get going, dinner will be ready in twenty minutes, we'll continue tomorrow" he said and then left the training room, leaving me standing there taken completely aback.
You all know the drill.
