Nine Months Later
Hermione walked briskly to her office, furious with herself for running late. God, she was all out of sorts! Until recently, she had mastered her schedule and was never once in her life late for anything- in fact, she typically arrived at least an hour early.
Her secretary, Arya Finnegan, was busy with paperwork when Hermione got to her office. The girl, however, looked up when hearing her boss' footsteps.
"Sorry I'm late, Arya. Bad morning. Do you happen to have a copy of the Daily Prophet?"
Arya nodded and slid it over to Hermione. "Here you go."
Hermione thanked her and walked into the office, wincing at how damn plain and boring it was. Merlin's beard she was a mess.
After opening the windows for some fresh air, Hermione settled into her desk chair and began reading the paper. On the front page was a moving picture of Lucius Malfoy, his cold gaze effective even through a photograph.
Rumored: Lucius Malfoy Deathly Ill- Family Unwilling to Support
The title caused Hermione to raise her eyebrows but she read the caption nonetheless.
It's perhaps one of the saddest stories ever recorded. Rumors are flying around the Wizarding World that Mr. Lucius Malfoy has not been heard from for over a year. The infamous Malfoy Manor looks vacant as ever, in fact, there's no evidence of Narcissa or Draco around. The family of three was last seen together about two years ago, strolling through Diagon Alley.
On a side note, it has been said that Lucius Malfoy was seen buying medicine from the apothecary shortly before his disappearance. Therefore, it has been concluded he has disappeared due to a long-term illness. However, it does not appear that either Narcissa or Draco have gone to help nurse him back to health.
So then this begs the question...where are they?
Hermione had to reread the article three more times just to make sure her eyes had not deceived her. Lucius Malfoy, one of the strongest wizards alive, was ill? She thought back to all of her encounters with the man, and still found it hard to believe he was "deathly ill". He was no careless wizard- had the wrong intentions and certainly did not have the kindest heart around- but nonetheless he was always poised and precise.
She never thought the day would come where she would feel bad for Draco Malfoy. Yet in that moment she couldn't help but feel a bit of sympathy for the former Slytherin as she stared at the words on the page.
Just then, a knock sounded on the office door. Hermione glanced at her watch and wondered who would be visiting her so early in the morning.
"Come in!" she shouted, folding the Prophet and placing it in a drawer.
"Hi, Hermione," Harry's voice said as he closed the door behind him.
Hermione smiled warmly at her best friend. "Hey there. How are you? How's Ginny?"
Harry came over to sit by her and nodded. "I'm fine. Ginny's great, actually- I'm...I really do love her, Hermione."
She couldn't help but smile at her friend's reddening face due to his confession. She was genuinely happy for the two; she knew Ginny loved and admired Harry just as much as he adored her. But at the same time she envied their simple relationship, wondering why she didn't have someone to share that with.
