a/n: hey my beautiful readers! Here's another chapter for you after all this time! sorry I haven't updated in forever... all I can really say is school sucks. majorly. haha. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this chapter :D on with the story!
Recap: they've just arrived at school after summer break, and this chapter takes place an hour after Amber's scadalous towel/shower/singing encounter with Harry...
Astronomy was actually quite fun, apart from the fact that Harry was being a total dickhead again. Much to my dismay, I was placed in the desk next to him after being yelled at by the teacher for being late, even though our passes were excused. I sighed as I slipped into my desk, and a minute later Harry plopped into the desk next to me, leaning casually against the back of his chair with his feet propped up on the desk.
"Harry, get your feet down," I hissed, crossing my arms over my chest as I tried to pay attention to the lesson. I'd applied for this course because I loved the stars and it made me feel more connected to my father, and now this asshole was going to ruin the whole thing. I didn't even know he liked astronomy. Hell, he was probably here just to annoy me.
"Harry, get your feet down," he mocked, his smirk deepening as he winked playfully at me. I just rolled my eyes and tapped my pencil idly on the desk, hating this already.
"Geez, Dots, don't be so uptight," he continued, his eyes sparkling.
I ignored him, trying to pretend that I wasn't affected by how close he was to me. He was leaned over, as if trying to tell me a secret or read off my paper, but he wasn't actually doing any of those things. He was just leaning in really close to me, so close I could barely breathe. I stiffened, keeping my eyes straight forward, not able to move.
"Goody two shoes much?" he whispered in my ear, quietly laughing. As usual, it sent those involuntary shivers down my spine. I broke then; shoving him away harshly.
"Two things," I whispered. "One: No one calls me a Goody Two Shoes and gets away with it. Two: why the fuck are you so close to me?"
I must have been a little too loud, because a few people looked over. I blushed and sank further into my seat, wanting to disappear. I could hear Styles laughing beside me.
"You two back there," the teacher barked. "Anything you want to share with the class?"
I straightened up, my cheeks burning. Beside me, Harry just shrugged nonchalantly, his feet still propped up on the desk.
"Young man! Get your feet off the desk!" the teacher yelled.
"Why?" Harry asked evenly, staring the man down.
"Does it matter? When I ask you to put your feet on the floor, you should do it, no matter if you want to be a little snot and disobey me or not. Do you understand?"
Harry widened his eyes. "No, explain it again," he said sarcastically, and I could see the teacher get a bit red in the face. Harry was pushing it more than usual, and it was the first day too. I didn't see why he always had to want attention all the time.
Practically all the girls were swooning as they stared at him. In their eyes, he looked like a fearless, macho bad boy, defying the teacher just to make him angry, and that turned a lot of them on. But me? No way.
At least, that's what I kept telling myself.
"Listen, kid, I don't know how you get away with treating the other teachers with disrespect like this. But in my classroom, it won't be tolerated."
Harry put his hand to his mouth as if in deep thought, looking at the teacher intently. Half the girls in the classroom had their eyes on him with a Starstuck expression on their faces; the others were glaring at me because I just so happened to be sitting next to him.
Uh, the real person they should have been glaring at was Harry, since he'd basically plopped down into this seat like he owned the spot next to me. Damn him for doing that, the little asshole. And damn my heart for that weird skittery feeling it left every time he leaned in close to me or even spoke to me.
"Mmm-hmm," Harry said, still looking at the teacher with that same thoughtful expression on his face. "And why, exactly, do you think that I give a fuck about that?" A beat after he said that, the whole class burst out laughing.
"OHHH!" a few dudes shouted, reaching out to give Harry a high five. Beaming in triumph, Harry slapped their hand back, and then he turned to me, hands up.
"Huh, Dots?" he asked, raising his eyebrows hopefully.
I crossed my arms over my chest, trying not to look at him. "No."
"Aw, come on, don't leave me hanging, love." He made the puppydog face, his green eyes growing huge. I felt a smile tease on the corner of my lips; I couldn't help it. There was just something about that face.
Finally, I gave in. "Okay, okay," I grumbled, and we high-fived. The touch of his hand left tingles on my skin, and it wasn't because he had slapped me hard. I slumped in my seat again, trying to ignore it.
"Is your name Harry Styles?" the teacher demanded, looking like he was about to scream from rage.
"I don't know, is it?" Harry replied sweetly before propping his feet up on the desk again.
This time the teacher chose to ignore it, but he wasn't letting Styles get off that easy. He straightened out his tie, looking incredibly pissed. I couldn't really blame him. I think that he'd sock Styles if he could.
"You know, the other teachers warned me about you," the teacher sputtered.
Harry shrugged. "Oh yeah, I slept with almost all of them," he said sarcastically, causing another round of laughter from the class. I pressed my hand to my mouth, trying to keep in the giggles. Harry must have heard me, because he swiveled his head over and grinned at me.
"ENOUGH!" the teacher bellowed.
Harry cocked his head, looking confused. "Are you sure?" he asked, gesturing to the class. "I mean, the rest of us seem to like my strokes of genius. It's about thirty to one, so...,"
"That's it, Styles! Detention!"
Harry's mouth dropped open in mock horror. "Oh, that's great, because I've never had detention before," he said sweetly, sarcasm dripping off of his words.
"Styles gets detention, Styles gets detention...," I sang under my breath, causing him to laugh.
OK, maybe I'm a little immature too, I admit it!
"What was that?" the teacher asked me, looking a little intimidating now that he was actually addressing me. Oh God, how did Harry do this?
"Um... nothing...," I stammered, feeling everyone's eyes on me. I could practically see Harry's smirk in my head.
"Detention for you, too, then, Miss Tomlinson!" The teacher cried. "Anyone else? Hmm?" He looked around the room threateningly, searching for someone who dared to disrupt the class further.
I felt my heart drop to my shoes. Shit, I couldn't have detention! Louis would kill me. "Are you serious?" I asked, throwing my hands up in the air. "That's not fair, I didn't do anything!"
"Fabulous!" Harry squealed, doing a little dance in his seat as he turned to face me. "That means we'll be together... alone... all day after school today, Dots. How does that sound to you?" he purred, his eyes roaming all over me for the millionth time today. He flashed me that signature half-smile he only wore on special occasions, and my mouth went dry and I couldn't speak for a second. Then my senses came back to me.
"Like hell," I growled, even though the pleasure racing through me was telling me otherwise. I turned back to the lesson, only to see the teacher looking smugly at us behind his glasses, crossing his arms over his chest.
"What's this? Why do I hear more voices?" he asked.
"I don't know, because you're crazy?" Harry said delightfully, and everyone in the room cracked up.
"THAT'S IT!" the teacher cried, banging his fist on Harry's desk, causing me to jump; his eyes were wild with anger. "Principal's office! NOW!"
"I don't know, maybe about in a million years...," Harry yawned, stretching out his arms.
"You too, Miss Skinny Jeans," the teacher snapped.
My eyes widened, and I stared down at my admittedly somewhat tight jeans in horror. I glanced around the classroom, finding a bit of comfort in knowing I wasn't the only one wearing skinny pants. A lot of other girls did, so he couldn't be talking about me...
Could he?
But to my horror, I saw his steely eyes locked in my direction. My direction! A flush of embarrassment rose in my cheeks. I couldn't believe this was happening. A few classmates around me stifled giggles, and I sank even further into my seat.
Although I was NOT a goody-two-shoes (and if I secretly was, a tiny part of me deep inside, I certainly didn't show it) I still had never gotten in trouble with the teacher. I always preferred to lay low, ask questions when I needed to, and mostly just stay on the teacher's good side. This was the first time I'd ever gotten reprimanded by a teacher, believe it or not. And it was definitely the first time I had ever had detention OR gotten sent to the principal's office.
And guess whose fucking fault THAT was?
"Oh yeah!" Harry let out a whoop, throwing a fist in the air. He turned to me, his cheeks flushed slightly with excitement. "You know what this means, Dots?" he asked, looking like a little kid right before going downstairs to see all of his Christmas presents.
I gritted my teeth, the fury burning deep inside me. "That you basically got me into trouble when I did nothing wrong?" I asked, turning to him, my voice sharp.
His face fell like the little kid's would when they found out all they'd gotten for Christmas were dirty socks. "Well, I was going to say we'd be screwups together, like the island of the two misfit toys, but...," he trailed off. "I see how it is." He looked away, and I could see by the way his lips seemed to curl upward that he was trying to hold his laughter in.
Instinctively, I reached out and slapped the back of his head. I was so sick of him!
He cringed, holding two hands above his head. When he was satisfied that I wouldn't whack him again, his smirk returned and he slung an arm over my shoulder.
"Come on, Amber, don't be like that," he purred, studying me intently. I tried to shrug him off, but he just kept his arm round me like it didn't phase him at all that he was violating my personal space. "I could teach you the ways of badass! You could learn to be a total sassmaster, like me!"
"Nice try, Styles, but the real sassmaster is Louis, and we all know it," I mumbled, trying to hide my smile.
"Please. Your brother can be such an ass sometimes. He's taking all the credit," Harry scoffed, actually looking a little annoyed.
"Right, because you're never an ass at all." Sarcasm drifted off my words.
He raised an eyebrow, those green eyes sparkling. "I'd sure like to tap your ass," he muttered under his breath.
I froze. "What did you say?" I asked, my eyes widening. Much to my dismay, my heart started to pound, and I crossed my arms over my chest, afraid he'd somehow hear it.
Harry smiled sweetly at me. "Nothing, my dear Dots, nothing at all."
"I heard you, you know." I wasn't giving up on this.
"Delusional," Harry sang under his breath,
That was it; I couldn't take being around him anymore. It was bad for my heart and tearing up my brain."Damn you, Styles," I cried before finally shrugging him off of me, leaning back in my seat, glaring at him. Our whole class had drunk in the scene with hungry eyes, watching intently as if it was their favorite sitcom. Even the teacher seemed to be hiding a smile behind that steely, intimidating gaze of his.
"Right, then, since you all seem to be done with your little flirtatious banter there, I'd be happy to escort you out of class," the teacher looked at us sternly. His eyes lingered on me for a second longer, and I could see the message in his eyes perfectly clear.
Stay away from him. He's a troublemaker.
I let out a breath and closed my eyes. It was the same look my father would have given me if he was still alive. If he was still here, I know he'd be the protective guy in my life, not Louis. Louis wouldn't have to take the burden. And even though I know my astronomy teacher meant well, it just made me... well, it just made me wish that my father was here more than anything.
I slid my bag over my shoulder. Harry was already at the door, watching me. I couldn't decipher the expression on his face. I walked to him, feeling everyone's eyes on me.
"I'm very ashamed in you both." The teacher looked us over, disgusted. "And on the first day of school, too."
"You obviously don't know Harry," I said, flicking my eyes in his direction. He beamed, like it was something to be proud of.
"That's me, captain asshole, at your service," Harry said, saluting the man with pure sarcasm. Pure disrespect dripped off his words, the kind that adults hated. The teacher stared him down, but Harry showed no discomfort. He just smirked.
"Get outta here," the teacher growled. I couldn't tell whether it was a threat or not.
"My pleasure, Mr. Greene. If you have any questions, call me at 1-800 KISS-MY-ASS."
"Why you little-"
I rolled my eyes and grabbed Harry by the arm before anything drastic happened. "I'm so sorry, Mr. Greene," I called over my shoulder. All I heard was a distasteful grunt in reply. As soon as he was out of earshot, I whirled around and stomped my foot right on Harry's as hard as I could.
"Ow!" Harry's eyes widened. He feigned hurt, contorting his facial expression into one of betrayal. "What the fuck was that for?"
"You know very well what that was for." I began walking ahead as fast as I could, but he easily caught up to me, smirking when I blushed.
"I really don't. Care to elaborate?"
I whirled around. "You fucking got me in trouble, Styles. I've never gotten detention before, not once, let alone gotten sent down to the principal's office. And if I hear one peep out of your mouth about what a goody-two-shoes I am, I will make it so you won't have children. Understood?"
"Aw, come on, Dots, I was just fooling ar-"
My hands balled into fists as anger coursed through my veins. I couldn't believe him. I actually couldn't.
"Just fooling around? So you're telling me you had the ability not to act like a cheeky asshole just because you wanted to seem all bad-boy-sexy for the girls, but you did it anyway just because?"
"Amber, chill. You sound like a teacher."
I blushed; I couldn't help it. Confrontation wasn't my strong suit, not at all. I stared at the ground as I walked. Seconds later I felt him sling an arm over my shoulder.
"I'm sorry, Amber. I know I was being an asshole. I don't know why I did it, all right?"
"I think I know perfectly well." I muttered.
"Yeah, well, I'm not really like that. I was just joking around. You know that, right?"
"But you got me in trouble. You do know that Louis is going to kill me for this, right?" I said, mocking his words.
"Louis doesn't have a say in any of this. He's your brother."
"He still looks after me," I said quietly.
"Yeah, more like he beats every guy up if they even take one look in your direction," Harry muttered. "Doesn't that get kind of old?"
I looked up at him, pulling away from his grasp. "Wait. Weren't we talking about how much of an asshole you were being in class? When did this subject change?"
Harry held my gaze. "When you brought up the fact that your brother is going to kill you when he finds out you were sent down to the principal's office."
"Yeah, and he'll burn me at the stake when he finds out that it was with you," I muttered. Styles laughed as I pushed open the door of the front office.
My eyes searched the office; when I found no other choice I walked with reluctance up to the horny secretary from this morning.
"Oh, you two again?" she asked, giggling a little. Her eyes drifted past me as she began checking Harry out not-so-discreetly. Then, as if satisfied, she turned back to me. "And where's your brother?" she asked, tilting her head.
"In class," I said shortly. "Listen, we were sent down here for an appointment with the principal." As I said it, my stomach clenched in dread. I hated being yelled at by adults, it just made me feel like shit. I knew any appointment with the principal would end badly; she was a stocky lady with a no-nonsense attitude and eyes like a hawk.
"Ooh, what'd you do to get in trouble?" The lady's eyes flickered from him to me. I could sense Harry's smirk even with my back turned.
"Nothing," I said quickly. "Just... let the principal know we're here, please."
"My pleasure."
I sighed and made my way to the row of waiting seats, where Harry was waiting. He smiled as I sat down, and I could feel him studying me.
"Hi," he said.
"Hey," I muttered.
He leaned in to whisper in my ear.
"Look, I really am sorry about the whole detention/principal's office thing," he whispered. As usual, his breath on my neck sent shivers and tingles of pleasure down my spine. I sucked in a breath, closing my eyes; it was almost too much to handle. Again with that whispering thing! What the hell was wrong with him? What the hell was wrong with ME?
"No you're not."
"Yes, I am." he said evenly, looking me right in the eyes so intently I had to look away. "I swear it. I didn't realize you were such a... well...,"
My eyes widened. "If you say Goody Two Shoes I swear to fucking God...,"
"No! No. That isn't what I was going to say at all. Just that.... uh...," he seemed to be struggling to find the right word.
"Goody two shoes," I said flatly.
He laughed, and for some reason it was the most beautiful sound I'd ever heard. "Yeah," he admitted. I shoved him playfully.
"Look, I'm not admitting that I am a Goody Two Shoes, but...," I said quietly.
He raised an eyebrow. "Yes?"
"I can tell you that I sort of overreacted with the whole detention thing."
His jaw dropped. "No. Fucking. Way."
"What? Is there a booger hanging out of my nose or something?" I squirmed self-consciously as he continued to stare at me like I had three heads.
He laughed, "No, I just can't believe it."
"Can't believe what?"
"That Amber Charlotte Tomlinson is actually apologizing to me."
It took a few seconds to click in my brain. A couple of days ago, before preparing for the party, I had said a variation of the same thing, using his full name. Styles was officially in mocking territory now.
But through all the joking, I couldn't help but be amazed that Harry had remembered that conversation. It was weird; before now I had thought that he couldn't really care less about the conversations we had. But that was over a week ago... heck, I would have completely forgotten about it now if he hadn't reminded me.
It just made me wonder, really.
"DAMN YOU, STYLES!" I cried out, making him laugh. I punched him in the shoulder, hard, only to practically bruise my knuckles and cry out in pain, which only resulted in him laughing even more.
"I'm going to get you back for that," I whispered.
"Harry Styles and Amber Tomlinson? Principal Jenkins is ready for you now."
"Sure you will," Styles whispered as he stood up, and his shoulder brushed against mine. And as he looked back with that trademark smirk, I could tell it hadn't been just a mere accident.
