I wake up to  sudden bang, followed by cursing and I spring up from the bed with panic and reach over to turn the bedside lamp on, just in time to see Tobias sat on the edge of our bed, rubbing his big toe, a painful grimace on his face.

"What happened?" I mutter, sitting up slightly while curling my hand into a fist and rubbing my eyes gently.

Tobias' head whips up in shock to see me awake and it was then I saw our nearly one year old puppy whining softly at Tobias' feet. The room is mostly lit by the lamp, but the small amount sunlight seeping through the curtains told me it was nearing morning.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to wake you. I just stubbed my toe." He rolls his eyes when he sees me chuckle slightly but continues anyway."But I think Alfie here needs to go to the bathroom, is that right, Alf?" Tobias said, his face grinning with joy as he looked at out pup that was quickly learning his potty training.

Alfie is some kind of cross between a Labrador and Jack Russell the owners had said when we bought him but they don't know it exact because Alfie was a rescue puppy who was found on the side of the road and taken to them. His jet black fur makes his large brown eyes stand out and make it almost impossible to say no to him.

Excitedly, Alfie's tail begins to wag as Tobias stands up from the bed and puts some shoes on. Soon, Alfie is racing out the door to our bedroom, as if he was trying to show Tobias where he really wanted to go.

"Go back to sleep. I'll wake you later, it's still quite early. I was thinking of taking Alfie to the beach later, will you be up for that?" Tobias asks as he pulls the duvet covers back over my body.

"Yeah, that sounds fun." I whisper, too tired to make anything louder. "Love you."

I hear him laugh lightly. "Go to sleep, Tris. I love you too."

His footsteps leave the room and the soft sound of him closing the door echoes before silence looms once more. I sigh contently. These past two years have been bliss.

I lived in the orphanage for a year after Miss Claudia transferred Peter, Lauren, Nita and a few others to another orphanage and I swear, even though that house still held memories for me, I started to actually feel safe there for once, something I hadn't felt since my family were alive.

But then, I turned eighteen and there was nothing I wanted more than to get out of that orphanage and start living my life. I passed my exams with average grades and settled on pursuing my dream and going to art school, where I am now.

As for Tobias, he moved out of that lighthouse and quit the job with his father when he realised that all it was doing was giving him grief and unnecessary bad energy in his life.

Together, we got our new home, this one, and a year later we were still going strong but we both had an urge to expand our small family and that resulted in us buying the little bundle of joy that is Alfie the puppy.

It's strange. I would never have thought that my life would end up this way. If you'd have told me a few years ago what's happening now, I would've laughed in your face.

They always said: good things come to those who wait.

So maybe all people have to do it wait a little longer and their own happy ending will come. It may be unexpected and it may be not in the way you originally wanted.

But it will come.

The beach was only a five minute walk from our small house due to Tobias wanting a home near his job. He got a job at the harbour, but he also has a job as a lifeguard here. Thankfully, it's his day off, so he needn't work when we get there today, which is always nice.
