Chapter 7
Rick had whisked Beckett into the frigid night air, not telling her a word about what they were doing, or where they were going.
"We can walk," He told me," It's only maybe ten blocks away." She knew ten blocks wasn't that far, but her feet hurt and even though she was with him, she wanted to go home. She wanted to climb in her warm bed and drift off into a deep, deep sleep.
"C'mon Rick!" She whined,"Please tell me where we're going!"
"Tsk tsk tsk. You're going to have to guess." He laughed at her cluelessness. She groaned, secretly enjoying this moment of unknowing wonder.
"Ummmm, the theatre?" She guessed.
"No."
"A bar?"
"Heck no. Not with you."
She was beginning to get frustrated. "I don't know, Rick. Just tell me!" Beckett could see her breath in front of her, curling like licks of fire.
"If you can't guess, you'll find out when we get there."
She groaned. They walked, talking about random things. His daughter, her job, their lives. After a while, she heard loud noises, kids playing, and festive music. They turned a corner and then she knew what he had planned.
Stood in front of her were games that no one can ever win, food stands, and a large, bright Ferris wheel. He had brought her to the fair.
She gaped. Before her mother had died, her family went to the fair every year. Those were the best memories, they were the happy memories.
Rick must have seen her face. "I know right!"
He yelled childishly, grabbing her hand and dragging her to the Ring-toss. Two kids ran past them, both hugging huge stuffed animals, giggling uncontrollably. She loved this. She loved seeing the carefree kids, who didn't have an ounce of guilt, or sadness. They radiated bliss.
Rick paid for 6 rings. Three for her, and 3 for him. He prepped, popping his neck and fingers. He tossed and missed all the rings by about 2 feet, sending it flying out behind the stand. Beckett threw her head back in an uncontrollable laughter. Rick glared at her and continued throwing. He missed all of them.
"Your turn, but this game is rigged, so don't expect to win." He expressed his loss. She threw all three rings, all of them landing on the neck of a bottle. He gawked at her as she smirked. The man handed her a large, fuzzy panda bear. She held the bear close to her chest, her other hand dangling at her side as she gloated.
"Don't get to cocky, Detective." He whispered in her ear, snaking his hand down and gripping her fingers tightly, protectively.
Rick bought a stick of cotton candy, which they both pulled small pieces off of, popping them in their mouths and waiting for the sugary fluff to melt.
"Let's go on the Ferris wheel!" He yelled, pulling her towards the ride. It's lights were fluorescent, bright and beautiful. They were seated in a small car barely big enough for the both of them. They squished together, she set her panda in her lap and he held the cotton candy. She grinned when the music started and they began their descent upward. After about 5 minutes they were at the top. She marveled at the city's beauty.
"Wow." She said. "This is unbelievable." She turned to Rick who was gazing at her. His blue eyes were set on her lips. Her eyes darted from his lips to his eyes. He leaned in ever so slowly, as did she. There's lips met in the middle. The sweet juices of the cotton candy swished inside her mouth, passion running through her veins like blood. They pulled apart and he smiled. That's when she knew. That's when Beckett knew she was in love.
