Jack Ward has just been demoted and exiled to one of the most boring, miserable places in the entire solar system: Mars City. The UAC needs soldiers and the United Marine Corps is more than willing to send its unwanted rejects and failures to play rent-a-cop all over the solar system. Jack isn't sure he has anything left to live for as he's dumped on Mars.
But as he settles in and gets to know his new fellow Space Marines, strange things begin happening. Men whisper rumors in dark corners, rumors of gruesome and terrifying experiments done up on Mars's two moons: Phobos and Deimos. Rumors of psychosis, of massacres, of otherworldly monsters.
At first, Jack puts off these rumors as something cooked up by a bunch of rookies with too much time and imagination. But then it happens: a distress call comes from Phobos. Something is waiting for Private Jack Ward and his fellow Space Marines up there, something beyond blood, beyond horror, beyond sanity...
