she stood in the wind, her hair blowing in her face, tears streaming down her cheeks.

she was done. she was utterly and completely done.

she lept over the railing, looking down at the city, hundreds of stories below.

it could end. it could.

she closed her eyes, wiping her tears with her sleeve.

she was prepared. she was ready.

but a voice stopped her. she turned around, and they locked eyes, and he rushed to her.

"come down," he said. "please, darling, come down."

"i can't," she mumbled.

he stood closer, grasping the back of her dress. "you can't leave, not now."

"why not? i don't want to be here."

"i can't live without you."

she looked at him, sorrow in her eyes. "i can't live, period."

he bit his lip. he loved her too much to let her go, even if that's what she wanted. what she needed. so he loosened his grip and took her hand instead. she watched him as he climbed over the railing, looking into her blue eyes as he did so.

"what are you doing?" she asked him.

"you can't stay here," he said. "i understand. but i can't be apart from you. so i'm coming, too."

she smiled just the slightest bit.

and they spred out their wings like a bird, but instead of flying, they were falling.
