Runes, Rings, and Little Things

Chapter 13

{MAGNUS}

Katherine Blue Bane-Lightwood is about to be born. I named the middle name Blue because of Alec's eyes. That was what first drew me to him.

When the nurse comes out with Katherine... she's crying. Not Katherine. The nurse. Another nurse comes to calm her, but she shakes her head no at me. "No? No what? What's happened?"

"I'm sorry, Mr. Bane. There was nothing we could do to save her." The lady hands me Katherine's lifeless body.

"No. No no no this isn't happening." When the nurses leave I put my hands on her body and try to revive her. Jace and Clary look happy, when they come to our level. I runs over to her. "Clary! Please help her please please!!" Clary, looks confused.

When I wake up, I'm relieved. It was just a dream. Just a dream.

But when I look over, I see Clary, Jace and Alec trying to do something to a baby. A dead baby.

{CLARY}

I keep putting my new life rune on the baby but nothing works. "She's not a ShadowHunter," I hear myself whisper. "It won't work."

"Yes it will," I hear a young women say. The mother of the baby, Mae, I think, is talking to me. "Her father was a ShadowHunter. His name was Samuel. He was a ShadowHunter. Just give little Katherine some time to heal. She'll be alright." Somehow, in a way, I could see Mae loved her daughter. But in another way, she wanted nothing to do with her. She hated the reputation she gave her. Maybe someday she'll be reunited with her.

At the moment of distraction, I feel the baby breathing in my arms. Alec slaps Magnus as hard as he can in the face, and Alec takes the child.

"By the way," Jace adds, "We're having twins. Boy and a Girl. Wanna help with names?"

It was all Alec could do not to punch him right there. But the little alive girl in his arms is basically telling him not to.
