Lockdown

3:58pm

"You're kidding," I blurted out.

Rylie Clover ran a hand through her ashy blonde hair, dropping the handgun she must have pulled from Queb's pocket onto the floor, next to Queb's knocked out body...

She looked up at me with those emerald green eyes. "What? You expecting someone else?" she asked. She sighed and stuffed her hand into her butt pocket of her skin tight jeans. She pulled out a small plastic bag and tossed it to me. I missed. By like a foot.

"Forgot to give those to you," she said as I scrambled to pick it up. "'Sides, after the shooting started I figured you were dead, so I was like, 'Sure. Whatevs.'"

I opened the plastic bag. I pulled out the two, fresh contact lenses. I stuffed them in my eyeballs- now everything was crystal clear. And dark.

I got a good look at tough Rylie Clover. Medium height. Ashy blonde hair, always pulled into a ponytail. Pointy nose, smooth and perfectly pretty face. Emerald green eyes. Tough and athletic. Also, her parents work in the military, which is why she's so... Well built.

Oh yeah, she was also the girl every male teacher in this building had their disgusting eyes on.

Rylie and I were never really friends. However, our mothers were friends, since like, college. So when our mothers both had Rylie and I as babies, they declared that Rylie and I would be "Best friends".

Long story short, Rylie and I never got along. But ever since I was blind, Rylie's mother had Rylie watch out for me - kick away bullies, bring extra contacts in case I forgot my glasses, etc.

So yeah, Rylie Clover. Not my best friend, nor my enemy. To me, she was just way too tough for me. Sure, she was smart. Got all right grades. My mom tried to get me to tutor her. What did that give me? A sock in the shoulder.

Anyway, I thought Rylie was dead. I hadn't really felt too bad since I didn't really think about her that much. But seeing her in front of me - skin tight jeans, dark rugby shirt... Was kind of unbelievable.

"I thought you were dead," I said, and before I knew it she was hugging me and tears were streaming down my cheeks. "I thought everyone was dead."

She patted my back a few thumps then let me go. "Kiddo, there's more survivors here than you think," she said, shrugging and giving me a small smile. "But c'mon, we gotta get outta here." she nodded at Queb. "Junior here might wake up."

"Junior?" I asked as we took off down the hall.

"Long story," she smiled at me.
